Our picturesque UK seaside town has been nicknamed ‘Bohemia on sea’… but it’s nowhere near Brighton | The Sun
RESIDENTS of a picturesque seaside town have told how their area has been nicknamed “Bohemia-on-sea” – but it’s nowhere near Brighton.
Locals of Cullercoats, North Tyneside, believe they live in the best spot in the UK, boasting beautiful beaches, stunning views and arty vibes.
Brighton is generally considered the most bohemian destination in Britain – but many believe Cullercoats gives it a good run for its money.
And Peter Mortimer, who has lived in Cullercoats for almost 50 years, says he can’t imagine living anywhere else.
He told Chronicle Live: "I moved here in the mid 70's and I think that there's just something about living by the sea.
"I originally had a flat with some friends and then I decided to buy this house as I knew the previous owners.

"Before living here I had always just lived in towns and more urban areas, but its amazing to see the community that has grown here over the years.
“Places like the crescent club and the community centre have so much going on, we even had Damon Albarn performing here a few years ago.
"There is a strong artistic feel here that I can really appreciate, we call it Bohemia by the sea and I couldn't think of a more accurate way to describe the place which I have called home for as long as I have."
Another local, Brian Dickson, says the town also goes by “Cullerfornia” because of the surfer crowd it attracts.

He said: "There is amazing food available right on our doorstep at places like Salt House and a selection of cafes. The place is rammed during the summer which shows how much of an attractive place it is to visitors.
"Cullercoats is a great place and the transport links are good with the metro station being really well placed.
“We have nothing against the area at all, and even though we are soon moving away, we will be coming back all the time to visit".
It comes after the most beautiful beaches in the UK were revealed last month.
The study, conducted by luxuryhotel.com, analysed Instagram data and beach length to find ones with the highest "hashtags per metre".
Kynance Cove, located in Mount’s Bay, Cornwall, came in at number one with nearly 55,000 hashtags, despite measuring just 200m long.
Brighton Beach, while it had more than 900,000 hashtags, is one of the longest on the list, measuring three miles.
And Cornwall's Fistral beach also made the top three, which is popular with the annual Baordmasters festival.
