Police launch manhunt for thug who stabbed man, 57, 'at random'

Another knife attack on the streets of Wild West London: Police launch manhunt for thug who stabbed man, 57, ‘at random’ leaving him fighting for life

  • Horrifying incident happened just before 4pm yesterday near Tower Bridge
  • Met said it was taking ‘unusual step’ of immediately releasing image of suspect
  • No items were taken from the victim and he did not appear to know his attacker

Police have launched an urgent manhunt after a knifeman stabbed a passer-by ‘at random’ in central London leaving him fighting for his life.

The horrifying incident happened just before 4pm yesterday near Tower Bridge, with the 57-year-old victim taken by air ambulance to hospital – where he remains today.

The Met said it was taking the ‘unusual step’ of immediately releasing an image of the suspect, a white man in a black coat holding a backpack who is seen running down a road, because they ‘urgently’ wanted to locate him.

No items were taken from the victim and he did not appear to know his attacker, police said, while urging anyone who sees the suspect to phone 999 and not approach him.

It is the latest example of pedestrians in the capital being caught up in bloody street violence since three ‘have-a-go heroes’ were knifed while trying to stop two muggers on electric bikes in Bishopsgate last Thursday.

The Met has taken the ‘rare’ step of releasing a photo of a man suspected of stabbing a passer-by at ‘random’ yesterday near Tower Bridge

Incredible footage showed the trio fighting off the gang after they tried to rob a City worker outside the 22 Bishopsgate skyscraper.

A 25-year-old man has now been arrested over the incident, police said on Monday.

The Met is also investigating the murder of 19-year-old Zasheem Kane Ontre Moses, who was fatally stabbed on Tottenham High Road at the end of last month.

Police were called at around 5.30pm to an altercation and found Zasheem with stab injuries.

He died in the arms of paramedics, with his family paying tribute to a ‘good young man’ who ‘looked after his brothers and mum’.

The Met said an investigation has been launched and a crime scene remains in place.

Yesterday’s stabbing near Tower Bridge is still being investigated by police.

No items were taken from the victim and he did not appear to know his attacker, police said, while urging anyone who sees the suspect to phone 999 and not approach him

Detective Sergeant Ben Stephenson said: ‘We are taking the unusual step of releasing this image very early in our investigation. We urgently want to locate this man.

‘This appears to have been a random attack. No items were taken from the victim who did not appear to know his attacker.

‘While we have no definite information to suggest there is any further risk to the public, given the nature of this incident we would urge anyone who sees this man, or recognises him, to call 999 and not approach him.’

Anyone calling 999 in relation to the incident should provide the reference 6655/11OCT.
