Prince of Wales and his three children pictured to mark Father's Day

What shall we wear for your Father’s Day photo, Daddy? Any colour as long as it’s royal blue! Prince of Wales and his three adoring children are pictured to mark special occasion – with subtle but poignant tribute to the late Queen

  • Prince George, nine, and Princess Charlotte, eight, gaze up at their father
  • Prince Louis, five, beams into the camera as he throws his arms around Dad

Relaxed, smiling and very clearly colour-coordinated, the Prince of Wales and his three adoring children strike a joyful image for Father’s Day.

In this photograph, released to mark the occasion, Prince George, nine, and Princess Charlotte, eight, gaze up at their father while Prince Louis, five, beams directly into the camera as he throws his arms around Dad in a giant bear hug.

The image also contains a subtle but poignant tribute to the children’s great-grandmother, as they are posing on a bench installed at Windsor to commemorate the late Queen’s 90th birthday on April 19, 2016.

It was taken by photographer and family friend Millie Pilkington earlier this year on the Windsor Estate – possibly at the same time she took the images of Louis in a wheelbarrow to mark his fifth birthday in April.

He’s certainly wearing the same outfit: a £75 Fair Isle sweater from Lallie London over a collared white-and-blue checked shirt.

Last year, the image captured a joyful moment on a family holiday in Jordan. All three children were seen roaring with laughter at a joke that, given William’s blushes, might have been at their dad’s expense

For Father’s Day 2020, William released a picture of the children clambering on his back on the grass

George mirrors dad in shirt and jeans while Charlotte is wearing a pretty but unfussy daisy print dress by Rachel Riley London, one of mum Kate’s favourite children’s designers.

There was already a wait of up to eight weeks to get hold of the £59 puff-sleeved button-front dress, even before this image was released late last night.

The Princess of Wales might not be in the picture – it marks Father’s Day, after all – but as an amateur photographer she has an eye for a good shot and had the final say on which picture would be released.

A similar photograph was issued last year. Then, the image captured a joyful moment on a family holiday in Jordan.

For Father’s Day 2020, William released a picture of the children clambering on his back on the grass.

Every photo is evidence of the carefree childhood William is so determined to provide his sons and daughter. But he has also pledged to ‘expose’ them to homelessness in the same way his mother the late Princess of Wales did for him.

Prince Louis stole the show as he gave a cheeky salute to the adoring crowds cheering his grandad King Charles’s official birthday on June 17

Prince William, Kate and their three children looked happy as they watched the magnificent flypast

In an interview with The Sunday Times ahead of a launch of a campaign to ‘end homelessness’ in Britain, Prince William said he wanted to do this so ‘they [will] grow up knowing that… some of us are very fortunate, some of us need a little bit of a helping hand, some of us need to do a bit more where we can to help others improve their lives’.

Last year, not long before his 40th birthday, William released a very happy photo taken during a family holiday to Jordan.

It showed William sitting between Prince George, eight, and Princess Charlotte, now seven, with his youngest, Prince Louis, now four, perched on his shoulders. He beams contentedly as his children roar with laughter.

This image differed from other official photographs at the time in that it was not taken by the Princess Kate, a keen amateur photographer. Instead, Kensington Palace said that the delightful portrait was captured by a private, unnamed photographer during a getaway the previous autumn.

A similar image of the Cambridges, seemingly taken on the same day and showing Kate in a khaki green dress and William in an olive shirt and beige shorts, was used for the family’s most recent Christmas card.

This portrait, however, offered a more informal, relaxed view of family life. While the exact location has not been revealed, the picturesque sandstone backdrop suggests it may have been taken in Petra, the ancient archaeological site in Jordan’s southwestern desert.

The Cambridges have a personal connection to Jordan, as Kate lived there for three years when her father, Michael, was posted to the capital Amman for his job with British Airways in May 1984 when she was two and her sister, Pippa, was eight months old.

A photo of Prince William and Prince Harry pictured in happier times, during a childhood visit to Birkhall on the Balmoral Estate, was posted by Prince Charles to mark father’s day  last year

The first photo to appear in the Instagram gallery from Charles last year was a black-and-white picture of Charles with his late father, Prince Philip with both pictured in military uniform

The Duchess of Cornwall also shared a photo of her with with her own father, the late Major Bruce Shand, last Father’s Day

And at the same time last year, Charles shared poignant photos, including including one of himself in happier times with sons William and Harry, to mark Father’s Day.

He shared Clarence House Instagram page, captioning them ‘Wishing everyone a very happy Father’s Day!’ – with a photo of his sons appearing as the final image in the gallery.

The picture shows a laughing Prince Charles, wearing a kilt, hugging his sons during a trip to Birkhall, the home of The Prince of Wales on the Balmoral estate, in the Eighties.

Charles and Camilla also published photos of him with with the Prince Philip, both in military uniform, and of Camilla with her father Major Bruce Shand.
