‘Prisoner named Bill the Bomb was even more fearsome than Charles Bronson’

Charles Bronson may be revered as one of the toughest men behind bars, but a man known as "Bill the Bomb" is said to have been even more fearsome.

One inmate at HMP Parkhurst was said to have been even more brutal than the aptly named "holy monster" as his French fans called Bronson.

Bill Williams, known as Bill the Bomb, was described as the "most fearsome, intimidating man" prison officer Phil Currie had ever met.

He even went on to say that he had fond memories of Bronson when compared to that of his encounters with Bill the Bomb.

Currie said: "Bill the Bomb was the most fearsome, intimidating man I ever met. He was probably the hardest man I ever met in prison. Everybody feared him."

The former boxer from Canning Town, London, had fought the likes of Muhammad Ali and could "give a punch and take a punch" according to Currie.

He went on to describe the "volatile" boxer as a man who was "always on the look for drugs", with Williams "controlled" by the Arif crime family.

Currie added: "Unlike Charlie, Bill liked to have a bit of a boss really. And I think the Arif's had an element of control over him.

"Bill could be a loose cannon but they could control him. But with Charlie I don't think anybody really controlled him."

Bronson, who has been inside prisons for lengthy stretches of time in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, will publicly meet with a parole board next month.

The infamous criminal received a life sentence in 1999 after he kidnapped a teacher in the prison system, but in June 2020 a High Court ruled he should have the right to appeal for his freedom.

Bronson had been stabbed during his time on the inside, a moment Currie said was "very sad".
