RIP Sprout: Boden’s famous Jack Russell company mascot which featured on its clothing range and posed in photoshoots has died aged 14, founder reveals

  • Johnnie Boden said he had ‘sad news’ about pet’s passing after she was put down

Her face has featured on many pieces from the best-selling children’s range and she’s even posed in photoshoots.

So it was with great sadness that the founder of middle class clothing brand Boden announced that the company mascot – the ‘entertaining and embarrassing’ Jack Russell Sprout – has died.

Johnnie Boden said he had some ‘sad news’ about the pet’s passing after she was put down aged 14.

Sprout often featured in clothing pictures for the brand and most recently had popped her paws in some trainers on offer on the company’s website. Her likeness was also knitted on to jumpers and put on T-shirts.

A statement on Boden’s social media read: ‘I am very sad to tell you that Sprout, our Jack Russell terrier and company mascot, was put down last week.

A statement on Boden’s social media read: ‘I am very sad to tell you that Sprout, our Jack Russell terrier and company mascot, was put down last week. Equally loved and loathed, she led an eventful 14 and a half years’ life’

‘Equally loved and loathed, she led an eventful 14 and a half years’ life.

‘She was forever entertaining and embarrassing us, whether rummaging through bins or bags at work, or nipping people (never drew blood) or (vegans, avert your eyes) chasing deer/badgers/foxes/rats/rabbits/moles.

‘She had no concept of restraint. And literally nothing scared her, except fireworks.

‘She was also wary of cats: they were one of the few animals who got the better of her.

‘She was always pleased to see me, whatever my mood, unlike (understandably) my family; she helped me and us enjoy the here and now.

‘Our weekend walks with her were the best therapy, because you could not think of anything but her: you never knew what was going to happen next.

‘Rudyard Kipling wrote this lovely poem, ‘Four Feet’, which sums up how I and my family feel.’

Boden was founded by Johnnie in 1991 as a mail-order business. It has since grown into a middle class mega-brand worth more than £300m and has even recently been sported by the Prime Minister’s billionaire wife, Akshata Murty.

One follower on Instagram said: ‘Very sad you have lost Sprout. She sounded a real character.

‘You really have tons of memories together and hope this helps to get through the sadness. Let’s raise a dog biscuit to Sprout.’

Another added: ‘She made a great age but that doesn’t make it any easier, sorry for your loss.’
