Ryanair crew in Spain set to strike for five months

Ryanair crew start FIVE months of strikes which could cause chaos for up to 1.4 million passengers as Spanish cabin staff walk out over pay and working conditions

Five months of Ryanair strikes could cause chaos for 1.4million passengers as Spanish cabin staff walk out over pay and conditions. 

Cabin crew at the budget airline are staging walkouts every week between Monday to Thursday from 8 August until 7 January.

Ten Spanish airports are expected to be affected by industrial action including Madrid, Malaga, Barcelona, Alicante, Sevilla, Palma, Valencia, Girona, Santiago de Compostela and Ibiza.

The protests follow a series of strikes which took place last month from July 18 to 21 and July 25 to 28. 

Customers have reacted furiously to a potential wave of disruption over the summer and winter months.

One Twitter user put: ‘Cabin crew strike in Spain may have something to do with it. That’ll be me next week!’

In a statement to MailOnline, a spokesperson from Ryanair said: ‘Ryanair today (09 Aug) confirmed that it expects minimal (if any) disruption to its flights to/from Spain on days when minority unions USO/SITCPLA are holding their ineffective and poorly supported strike actions.

‘Recent strikes by minority unions USO/SITCPLA have been poorly supported by cabin crew and have had minimal – if any – effect on Ryanair flights.

‘Ryanair has recently reached an agreement with the main Spanish cabin crew union (CCOO) on pay, rosters and allowances for its Spanish cabin crew. 

‘Ryanair operates over 3,000 daily flights (almost 100,000 per month) and less than 1% of these flights have been affected by Spanish cabin crew disruptions.’

Under UK and EU law passengers are entitled to compensation if an airline cancels a booking less than 14 days before their flight. 

Flyers will only be offered a refund if the company warned them more than two weeks in advance. 

easyJet pilot strikes in Spain are set to take place this month during three different intervals. 

Industrial action will happen on 12 to 14 August, 19 to 21 August and August 27 to 29. 

BA employees will not be taking strike action after coming to a “vastly improved” agreement with their employer.
