Scotland Yard splashes out more than £1million on diversity jobs as critics say chiefs are ‘policing political correctness’
- The Metropolitan Police employs 23 people to focus on equality and diversity
- Some woke roles will be paid for more than the average frontline police officer
- A report last month into eight forces found a ‘prevalent’ culture of sexism
Scotland Yard was last night accused of ‘policing political correctness’ after figures revealed it spends more than £1million a year on diversity roles.
The Metropolitan Police revealed it employs 23 people to focus on issues of equality, diversity or inclusivity (EDI), following a Freedom of Information request.
Their salaries cost the taxpayer a total of between £1,177,267 to £1,479,962 – meaning some woke roles will be paid far more than the average frontline police officer.
The figures, obtained by the campaign group Conservative Way Forward, were seized upon by Tory MPs.

They said recent revelations about sexism in the Met suggested the diversity staff are ‘not exactly proving their worth’.
Tory MP Tim Loughton, a member of the Commons home affairs committee, said: ‘At a time when money is tight… many people will question why money is being diverted to policing political correctness rather than policing crime.’
A report last month from the HM Inspectorate of Constabulary into eight forces found a culture of misogyny, sexism and predatory behaviour was ‘prevalent’ in all of them.
The same review found it was too easy for misogynistic and corrupt officers to join up and stay in uniform, and it was likely there were thousands who should not be in the job.

A Met Police spokesman said: ‘The Met makes no apology for ensuring that a proportionally very small number of its total approximate workforce of 47,000 cover these important roles.’
The Mail revealed on Saturday the NHS is advertising EDI jobs with combined salaries of more than £1million, as nurses strike over pay, leading to criticism of ‘woke non-jobs’.
And last night, The Daily Telegraph reported health trusts were spending more than £8million a year on 187 such jobs across the workforce.
