The harrowing call between emergency responders who had received reports of a man being savaged by a great white shark off the coast of California.

The call handler was heard telling paramedics: "We're getting reports that somebody has been attacked by a shark."

To which, they responded, "Affirmative we are with the patient now" as the commotion of the incident was heard in the background in the clip which was broadcast on ABC News.

It later emerged that a swimmer, named Steve Bruemmer had been left with "severe injuries" after the sea beast attacked him at Lovers Point Beach, in Monterey Bay, California on June 22 at around 10.30am, Ocean Grove Police Department confirmed.

The retired IT specialist was rescued by three brave surfers who were seen in footage from the incident, bringing him back to shore with their paddle boards.

Sacramento Police officer Paul Bandy and his nurse wife Aimee Johns were among the heroes who rushed to help after hearing witnesses' screams and spotting the man in distress.

Bandy told KSBW: "He was screaming for help, you could tell the sound and the emotion in his voice that there was something definitely wrong and he was slapping the water.

"I wasn’t sure if that was some sort of thing he was trying to get something away from him or just trying to draw attention to himself.

"As soon as we got close to him, we could see he had severe lacerations on his arms and legs."

Johns said that the bloke was "bleeding severely" from his abdomen and his leg was almost severed as they pulled him from the water.

Local resident Heath Braddock was teaching children to surf in the area when he also noticed the commotion and took his class back on land before "grabbing a couple of boards and took two boards out”.

He said he "saw kind of the pool of blood. It was probably the size of a table or a car" before the three good samaritans managed to put the victim on the board and get him to shore for emergency care.

“We got my biggest board and the gentleman, Paul, helped me roll the victim on the board belly down and got him kind of centred and stable. We had him hold my food and we paddled him in,” Braddock added

The victim was transported to Natividad Hospital by American Medical Response to be treated for his "significant injuries".

Police said he had suffered a broken leg as well as severe wounds to his stomach, shoulder and leg.

A statement from Pacific Grove officers added: "We want to express our gratitude and appreciation to the good Samaritans that took immediate action and personal risk to assist the swimmer. We send our prayers and thoughts to the swimmer and their family.”

A firefighter drone was deployed in an attempt to locate the shark after the attack, which Pacific Grove city manager Ben Harvey claimed did spot it but there have been no further sightings since.
