Shark seen in waters near busy beach as swimmers run for their lives

Shocking moment aggressive shark swims towards bathers in shallow water off the Florida coast sending them running to the shore screaming

  • Beachgoers in Florida experienced a scene reminiscent of the movie Jaws as they ran in fear from a shark spotted swirling in the water
  • Dramatic incident was captured on cellphone video and sees people enjoying a day at the beach when the shark became visible and agitated in the open water
  • Calls of ‘shark!’ were urgently shouted to alert those who may not have noticed the imminent danger, including a swimmer on an inflatable nearby

In a scene that could have come straight out of the 1975 movie Jaws, beachgoers were seen running for their lives as a shark was seen swirling in the waters before them.

The dramatic footage, filmed in Florida, sees beachgoers enjoying a day out on the sands when suddenly a shark was spotted only feet away, swirling and flailing out in the open water.

A swimmer on an inflatable can also be seen relacing close by leading to frantic calls of ‘shark!’ being yelled out to alert those who may not have seen the imminent danger.

Unlike in the film where a predatory Great White sneaks up on swimmers without any warning, in this particular instance, the shark appeared to be extremely active and agitated creating quite a splash.

The shark which was filmed in Perdido Key at 2:15pm on Sunday afternoon and was moving at such speed that it appeared to be creating waves all of its own on the surface, with it black dorsal fin clearly visible for all to see.

The sighting, which was reported by WEAR was one of several sharks that were reported over the July 4th holiday weekend.

Great White sharks were recorded near Cape Cod Bay in Massachusetts, and there were reports of sightings off the coastlines of Chatham, Orleans, and Nantucket.

Cape Cod is known as a hotspot for shark sightings due to the increasing seal population, which is believed to attract sharks that feed upon them.

‘Most of the focus is on Cape Cod, but these sharks can show up everywhere. They travel all along the coast,’ ocean researcher John Chisholm told The Boston Herald.

Marine biologists suggest avoiding swimming in the ocean before dawn and after dusk when sharks are often looking to feed.

‘This is the time when sharks become more active. They actually feed more commonly, generally, during these twilight hours of both dawn and dusk. And why is that? Because they have sort of the advantage on their prey’, explained ocean biologist Bob Hueter to WINK.

It is also recommended not going into the water if bleeding and to refrain from wearing bright swimsuits which sharks can be attracted to.
