Snow and ice spark weekend chaos for millions amid multiple Met Office warnings

Multiple Met Office weather warnings will again be issued with ice and snow set to bring more chaos across the UK this weekend.

The freezing temperatures will once more lead to travel delays on the country's roads with some vehicles and their occupants likely to be stranded.

Delays and cancellations to rail services and air travel are expected to be another consequence of the continued cold snap.

Some rural communities could also be cut off from their surrounding areas, while power cuts will possibly affect certain regions of the country and there might be issues with mobile phone coverage too in different parts of Britain over the next two days.

After the flurry of Met Office warnings yesterday (December 16), none will actually be in place for today (December 17).

But tomorrow (December 18) will see nearly the whole of the country covered in a yellow warning over ice, with some areas warned over heavy snowfall too.

Most areas in the south of England will see a period of rain and snow mixed falling on frozen surfaces that will lead to dangerous icy conditions, which will cause some inevitable travel disruption.

The north of England and Scotland, meanwhile, will see a period of snow leading to some disruption to travel and other activities, before turning to rain later.

It is then predicted that conditions will get milder next week, as the build-up to Christmas Day begins.

The Met Office weather forecast reads: "On Saturday, further showery rain will affect northern and western parts, with snow on hills. Mostly dry with sunny spells in the south and east.

"Temperatures recovering a little but still feeling cold. Rain, accompanied by strong winds, and preceded by snow and perhaps some icy conditions, moving north-eastwards on Sunday, with milder conditions following. Remaining unsettled into the next week."
