Ingrid Matthew, 54, whose body was inflicted with 82 knife wounds, was described by her family as ‘kind’, ‘happy’ and ‘completely selfless’

A teenage son who stabbed his mother more than 80 times with a hunting knife has been jailed for life after pleading guilty to manslaughter.

Aaron Matthew, 19, repeatedly knifed 54-year-old Ingrid Matthew before slitting her throat and leaving her to die on his bedroom floor.

Leicester Crown Court heard that her body was found in a pool of blood by her former partner, and Aaron Matthew’s father, Andrew Marshall at the property in Leicester on September 11 last year.

In a victim statement read out during the hearing, Ms Matthew’s brother Curtis described his sister as ‘completely selfless’ and spoke of how the family were still learning to live without her almost a year on from her death.

Aaron Matthew handed himself in to police in Cambridgeshire the day after his mother’s body was discovered.

He was charged with murder but entered a guilty plea to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility, with the court being told that his previously undiagnosed Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) had substantially impaired his ability to exercise self-control at the time his mother was killed.

The teenager was given a life sentence yesterday and ordered to serve a minimum of six years and 226 days after a judge deemed him a ‘serious risk to the community’.

Aaron Matthew, 19, was given a life sentence yesterday after pleading guilty to manslaughter. He killed his mother by stabbing her repeatedly with a hunting knife

Detective Inspector Nicole Main, from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit, said afterwards: ‘Only Aaron Matthew can explain why he took his own mother’s life.

‘I hope today’s sentencing can provide a degree of closure to Ingrid’s family and those to whom she was closest.

‘Sadly, no sentence given will bring her back and my heartfelt condolences go out to them as they continue with the grieving process to come to terms with their loss.’

Ms Matthew’s family said in a statement after the case: ‘Ingrid was a private person but a kind, vibrant and special soul.

‘She was always happy, dancing and willing to help anyone in any way she could.

‘She was completely selfless and we are devastated that she’s gone. Learning to live without her has become our new reality.

‘We miss Ingy. We are grateful for everything she did to help her mum and others.

‘We are so proud of how she always supported others and rejoiced in their achievements. Ingrid will be forever missed by family, friends and the community.

‘We love her very much and hope one day we can come to terms with her passing.

‘We know the criminal justice system has its role to perform in ending violence towards women and young girls.

‘But we, as individuals, members of the community and society as a whole, also have our part to play.

‘As a family we know first-hand just how important this is.’

Ms Matthew was one of more than 100 women killed by men in the year between March 2021 and March 2022.

Less than a week after Ms Matthew was killed 28-year-old teacher Sabina Nessa was murdered in south east London.

The most recent Femicide Census from 2020 found that during the last decade a woman was killed by a man every three days.
