Surfer tells how he survived terrifying 13ft great white shark attack

A surfer lucky to be alive has shared how he survived an assault from a 13-foot great white shark.

Michael "Jared" Trainor went surfing in Ferndale, California, on October 2 at a time of year referred to as ‘Sharktober’.

Speaking to FoxDigital, Jared said: “It's known in that community that you don't want to be surfing that much or alone in October. They call it ‘Sharktober’".

The 31-year-newlywed and dad of one said he had noticed a couple more seals than usual in the shallows. This, he reckoned in hindsight could have been a sign there was something out deeper in the water.

"I must've been in the water for 10, not even 15, minutes. The first set of waves came through. I paddled past them and sat on my board, and then I was kind of having that ominous feeling anyway, and, next thing I knew, I was underwater."

He said he knew his right leg had been “chomped on” and could tell he was being dragged deeper underwater.

"I thought it was a seal, because the deepest point of contact was around my knee, so it made it feel like it was a smaller bite".

He said he kicked out and the creature released him from its jaws, but he reckons that his surfboard – trapped underneath him – might have saved his life.

Swimming back to the beach, another surfer spotted him and assisted, calling an ambulance and helping him to shore.

Trainor said: "I didn't realise how badly I'd been injured.

“When the fire department came, they tied a tourniquet to my leg, and when they cut off my suit, that's when I saw the… bite marks in the board, and I started to realize that it was, in fact, a shark".

The shark, he later discovered, weighed around 1,000lbs.

"I just remember saying, ‘Holy s***, that was a shark!’ I can't believe that was my worst fear, and it happened," he said.

His inner thigh had six lacerations on it and the MCL in his knee was torn.

Some of his bone had been penetrated too, but doctors told him he’d got off lucky.

"The surgeon was also a surfer and kept stressing how fortunate I am and how close it could've been to a life-or-death situation” – a little closer to his artery and he could have suffered a cardiac arrest.
