A house was destroyed in a huge explosion heard more than five miles away today – as emergency services were called to examine the wreckage.

Fire crews, ambulances and police were called to tackle the blast which wrecked the end of terrace house in Morriston, Swansea.

People living nearby reported windows shaking when the explosion rocked the street.

One said: ‘It was an enormous bang – it shook the house and was heard miles away.’

The house in Clydach Road was destroyed along with neighbouring properties being damaged. Emergency services have not yet reported any casualties.

One neighbour said: ‘It is a hell of a mess. If anyone was in the house they wouldn’t stand a chance.’

Neighbour Gemma Evans, 33, said: ‘everyone has been evacuated. Two of the houses are just gone and we have no idea if anyone was in at the time.’

Emma Kavanagh wrote: ‘Felt like the last earthquake we had. I thought our chimney had come down!’

A statement from South Wales Police said: ‘Emergency services are responding to an incident on the junction of Field Close and Clydach Road in Morriston. Please avoid the area whilst we deal with the incident.’

Leader of Swansea Council Rob Stewart said: ‘A major incident has been declared after a suspected gas explosion in Morriston. Emergency teams are responding.

‘It is not known at this time if there are any injuries or fatalities or individuals trapped in the rubble.

My thoughts are with residents at this time.’

Locals say there is a large number of emergency service teams at the scene.

Roads in the area have been closed off and people are being asked to stay away from the area as emergency services work at the scene.

A team of gas engineers from Wales and West are on their way to the scene.

There is no confirmation that emergency services are dealing with a gas explosion but the team have been called to assist with the investigation.

South Wales Police was called just after 11.20am this morning with a report of an explosion at a property on the junction of Clydach Road and Field Close in Morriston.

A spokeswoman said: ‘Emergency services are working at the scene, and we are asking that people avoid the area so we can deal with this incident.’
