The one baby name that is sweeping across Australia

The one baby name that is sweeping across Australia as the top ten favourites for boys and girls are revealed – and there’s not a Harry, Kate or Meghan in sight

  • Most popular baby names of 2022 are Oliver and Amelia
  • Oliver has claimed top spot in QLD and SA for a decade

The most popular baby names for 2022 have been revealed and once again Oliver reigns supreme as names such as Jack fall out of fashion.

The name Oliver is clear of the pack, claiming the top spot as the most popular baby name in both Queensland and South Australia for 10 straight years.

Last year, it was also the most popular boys name in every state bar one where it was pipped by Charlie.

The most popular girls name is Amelia, which edged out strong contenders including Charlotte, Isla and Olivia.

Oliver and Amelia have topped the list of most popular baby names with the former reigning supreme in Queensland and South Australia for a decade

While Oliver, Jack and Charlotte have been some of the most popular baby names across the country, a single name doesn’t dominate like it once did as the diversity of baby names increases.

And while Oliver dominates across the country, over the past decade there have only been around half as many babies named Oliver as there were babies named Peter in the 1960s.

Queensland Attorney-General Shannon Fentiman confirmed Oliver had reigned supreme in the state for a decade yet noted the array of different names that babies are being called.

‘It’s fascinating to see the various names which have changed in popularity and the unpredictability of the results most notably for girls names over the last few years,’ Ms Fentiman said.

According to Queensland’s Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, the state recorded 62,740 births in 2022.

‘Charlotte, Isla and Olivia continue to see popularity in the top four for names for girls, having not budged for much of the last decade,’ Ms Fentiman said.

While Oliver dominates across the country, over the past decade there have only been around half as many babies named Oliver as babies that were named Peter in the 1960s as the diversity of baby names increases

‘Oliver is still holding onto the top spot – now for the tenth year in a row – with another commanding lead since overtaking Jack in 2013,’ she said.

‘Boys names have been remarkably stable in recent years.’

Ms Fentiman said the only new boys name to crack the top ten this year was Luca, moving from 18th to 10th and knocking out Elijah, which has fallen to 12th.
