UK weather: 2 inches of rain to batter parts of Britain over just a few hours as Met Office releases yellow rain alert | The Sun

TWO inches of rain will batter parts of Britain over just a few hours – as the Met Office releases a yellow weather alert.

The warning, in place since 4.39am, covers most of southern England and the Midlands as far north as Birmingham and Norwich, as well as south east Wales.

Met Office forecasters said that heavy rain and thunderstorms will move northeast across the area – with some transport disruption likely this morning.

At 6.45am this morning the yellow alert was extended eastwards and upgraded to a "medium impact" thunderstorm warning – and will now run until 10.30am.

The Met Office said: "An area of heavy rain and thunderstorms will move northeastwards during Tuesday morning.

"This will bring 10-20 mm in 1 hour to many places within the warning area – but also a smaller corridor of torrential rain giving 30-40 mm in 1-2 hours in places accompanied by frequent lightning and gusty winds."

Wednesday will be more of a showery day rather than persistent rain, but drier in the south east.

As of Thursday there will be some showers but temperatures will start to rise towards the weekend.

Met Office spokesman Stephen Dixon said: "By Friday there's some possibility of rain in Northern Ireland, the west of England, it will be generally drier in the South East.

"The weekend could get up to the high 20s or low 30s, the south east will see the warmer weather.

"The week will be sitting relatively warmer for this time of year but more subdued than we've seen, but areas will hit heatwave criteria as we get to the weekend."
