What is the running of the bulls in Pamplona?

Each year, the streets of Pamplona, Spain, are filled with hundreds of people and bulls in a race that sees participants trying to make it to the end of the course.

The race usually takes about two and a half minutes, which is the time it takes the bulls to run the 850 meters from its starting point at the pens of Santo Domingo to the bullring. 

However, sometimes the bulls get distracted, and the race can take a bit longer.

There have been occasions when the running of the bulls has taken up to half an hour.

What is the Running of the Bulls 2019?

On the San Fermin festival website, it reads: “Often they would run ahead of the bulls to entice them forward.

"With the passing of time, the event became popular with the general public and the men began to run in front of the bulls instead of remaining behind the animals as the bull minders always do.”

The event was believed to date back to as early as the 13th century, with many claiming it was an essential activity for butchers at the time.

The Running of the Bulls is from July 6 – July 14 in Pamplona, Spain at 8 am.
