Woman stabbed her dinner lady mother to death in custody battle killing: Victim, 58, begged ‘please don’t hurt me’ as she was knifed more than 30 times in row over killer’s child

A 58-year-old dinner lady was heard pleading with her daughter ‘please don’t hurt me,’ before she was stabbed to death in her west London home. a court has heard. 

Hanaa Bennis, 21, knifed her abusive mother Aziza Bennis, 58, more than 30 times in Boddington Gardens, Acton, west London, on 15 August last year.

Police were called to reports of a loud altercation between the mother and daughter following the escalation of a row about custody of the 21-year-old Hanaa Bennis’ child. 

Neighbours heard ‘screams’ coming from the family home, before police found the 58-year-old victim collapsed in the lounge.

Police later discovered Hanaa Bennis had filmed the aftermath of the attack on her mobile phone, in a video that shows her mother covered in blood and a blood-stained kitchen knife in her hands.

Despite the best efforts of ambulance crews, the 58-year-old dinner lady was declared dead at the scene.  

Mother-of-one Hanaa Bennis earlier admitted manslaughter on the basis of diminished responsibility, on the basis her mental function was impaired. 

The 21-year-old had told psychiatrists she had been abused by her mother for many years. Police found evidence of drug and alcohol abuse in the home.

The prosecution today accepted her plea and offered no evidence against her on the charge of murder.

The court heard there was a custody battle between Bennis and her mum in relation to the care of her own child.

Bennis has six previous convictions for offences including possessing a bladed article and assault.

She was sentenced to a community order for assaulting an emergency worker in 2021 and was still subject to the order when she killed her mother.

A post-mortem examination has found the cause of death to be multiple stab injuries.

Bennis had originally told police she killed her mother in self-defence. She also rang her boyfriend and told him the same.

Prosecutor Edward Brown, KC, told the Old Bailey today: ‘It became immediately apparent to all concerned in this investigation that there was a significant background to this case.

‘Both psychiatric reports supported the defence of diminished responsibility.

‘However both experts had relied on what the defendant had said to them about the background of the relationship between mother and daughter.

‘The prosecution interviewed the defendant’s sister- who also detailed the abuse suffered by herself and the defendant at the hands of their mother.

‘Extensive social services records going back many years tended to strongly support the background detail as set out by the sister and in both psychiatric reports.’

Judge Mark Lucraft, KC, the Recorder of London, ordered reports ahead of sentence on 31 July.

Police arrived with the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance to find the victim suffering from multiple stab wounds

Joel Smith, prosecuting, told an earlier hearing Hanaa was involved in a ‘volatile relationship’ with her mother.

Police were called after neighbours heard ‘screams and sounds of a disturbance’ coming from the address and Aziza Bennis saying: ‘Please don’t hurt me!’

Mr Smith told the court at one point Hanaa could be heard saying: ‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry.’

Police found the victim collapsed in the lounge and recovered a blood-stained knife, the court heard.

Mr Smith said a postmortem revealed Aziza had been stabbed more than 30 times.

Police found a video on Hanaa’s mobile phone showing the scene after the killing, the court heard.

‘She pans the camera around the lounge showing her mother covered in blood. She then shows the blood-stained knife to the camera,’ said Mr Smith.

Bennis, of Uxbridge Road, Ealing, admitted manslaughter.
