World’s craziest protests from mass ‘face sitting’ to living in tree for 2 years

When it comes to getting their point across, some campaigners will literally stop at nothing.

Some of the craziest protests have seen women whipping out their boobs, porn stars sitting on faces on the lawns of London and environmentalists baring their bums for MPs.

In the US, one barefoot campaigner even spent two years up a 200ft tree.

And just this week, people donned dinosaur costumes and hurtled through the streets of Pamplona in protest at the Spanish town's bull run.

Here, Daily Star looks back at some of those most memorable protests in history.

Take a seat

In 2014, porn stars, escorts and like-minded protesters flocked to Westminster for a mass face-sit while singing tunes from Monty Python. As you do.

Hundreds had gathered to demonstrate for sexual freedom after changes to porn regulations banned acts such as spanking and face-sitting in UK online porn.

Banners and signs read “Shame on you, we come too” and “Urine for a shock if you expect us to stop!”

Bum-rush in the House of Commons

In 2019, a group of protesters stripped down and glued themselves to the windows of the public gallery of the House of Commons.

The cheeky activists from campaign group Extinction Rebellion spent almost 20 minutes with their buttocks facing the chamber while a Brexit debate took place.

Some were adorned in full grey body paint, wearing elephant masks. The group said said the demonstrators aimed “to bring the message that politicians neglect of the climate crisis has become an ‘elephant in the room’”.

Tuppence a bag

Feathers were ruffled when Bernard Rayner, the last pigeon feed seller in Trafalgar Square, was evicted in 2001.

The aim was to reduce the number of birds at the popular London tourist spot but Bernard's supporters came to his defence.

They protested against Greater London Authority by dressing as seven-foot-tall pigeons and blocking traffic.

Mr Rayner eventually gave up his pitch following an out-of-court settlement, ending his family’s half-century association with feeding the birds.

Women ditch bras for abortion rights

In March this year, two Femen activists bared their boobs in public in front of the US embassy in Madrid.

The activists from the international feminist association were protesting against the decision of the US Supreme Court against abortion.

The pair carried a banner that read "abortion is sacred."

They also held a similar protest in Paris against Vladimir' Putin's invasion of Ukraine in the same month.

Protester goes out on a limb

Julia “Butterfly” Hill took tree-hugging to new heights when she climbed an ancient 200ft tree in Northern California and stayed there for 738 days.

During her tree-sitting venture, which saved the 600-year-old redwood dubbed “Luna”, she was reportedly visited by celebrities such as Joan Baez and Woody Harrelson.

She also had a trusty team of volunteers refreshing her supplies and taking away waste.

Defiant PDA

Kiss-ins have been a popular protest for LGBT activists.

In 2016, about 200 people took part in a mass kissathon after a gay couple were asked to leave a Sainsbury's supermarket in east London for holding hands.

Gay men and women arrived at the store, and blasted out Diana Ross and Donna Summer classics before heading inside for a snog-fest among the aisles.

Two years later another affectionate protest was held outside the Uzbekistan consulate in New York to highlight violence and brutality against LGBT people in parts of Eastern Europe.

Legal battle turns dirty

A farmer was arrested after his dirty protest saw him dump his muck spreader on the steps of Derby Crown Court.

Charles Hirons fired five tonnes of manure on the court steps in anger at a law firm.

It took authorities three hours to clean up.

Hirons was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage after the dawn attack in 2017.

In a similar protest in France, farmers vented their anger at the government by dumping 100 tonnes of manure and rotten vegetables in the centre of Chartres.
