WWE Clash at the Castle: 5 things to look out for at UK stadium show

WWE Clash at the Castle is almost upon us as up to 70,000 are expected in Cardiff on Saturday.

The Principality Stadium spectacular is WWE’s first stadium show in the UK for 30 years, and plenty of big names are expected to be in town.

Three decades ago, the iconic old Wembley Stadium was packed with over 80,000 wrestling fanatics as The British Bulldog completed a dream homecoming, defeating brother-in-law Bret Hart for the coveted intercontinental title.

This time around, that pressure of the homeland falls on the UK’s Drew McIntyre, who has the ominous task of challenging Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns for all the marbles.

The show is also the first major Premium Live Event for WWE following the retirement of Vince McMahon – SummerSlam already having had much of McMahon’s involvement prior to his controversial exit.

All eyes will be on new chairwoman Stephanie McMahon and husband Triple H, who heads up the company’s creative, to see just how big a splash they make.

Ahead of the bash, Daily Star has compiled a handy guide of 5 things to look out for at WWE Clash at the Castle.

  • WWE Clash at the Castle: Your chance to be at huge live preview show

A surprise or two

WWE’s marquee events are famed for having a surprise or two hiding up their proverbial sleeve – something to give the mammoth crowd and the likely huge TV audience something to remember.

What form this might take in Cardiff is frankly anyone’s guess. Tyson Fury, a known graps fan and occasional WWE star, will be there. It’s unlikely he’d get physical, but an appearance would certainly go down well with the UK fans.

  • Tyson Fury set for WWE return this weekend – but Gypsy King unlikely to be fighting

Perhaps a big return? Triple H has acted quickly in recent weeks to bring back released and departed talent back to WWE, could this continue on Saturday?

Will Sasha Banks and Naomi make that much-anticipated comeback? Will Bray Wyatt be the next to head back to WWE? The possibilities are endless.

The unthinkable

After two years running riot at the top of WWE as its key male champion and sweeping aside all before him, Roman Reigns appears unstoppable.

Maybe, just maybe, his dominant reign – arguably the most dominant of any in the modern era in fact – could come to a screeching halt in Wales?

Triple H is a known fan of Drew McIntyre and was instrumental in his WWE return in 2017. While nobody has really got close to dethroning Reigns in the two years, he’s held the gold – might Saturday be the day they finally make the ultimate switch and take the title away from the Tribal Chief?

  • WWE legend The Undertaker looks unrecognisable in snap as he prepares for Cardiff show

More Brits!

Drew McIntyre isn’t the only man from these shores returning home this weekend to a hero’s welcome.

Keep an eye out for Sheamus, who challenges for the Intercontinental title in what should be an absolute slug-fest against Gunther.

The Irishman won’t be alone. His Brawling Brutes brothers are Birmingham’s Pete Dunne – wrestling as Butch these days – and Yorkshireman Ridge Holland.

It’s highly unlikely the latter pair will stand idly by during the match, so a proper scrap with Brit fists flying everywhere seems inevitable!

  • 'Give me John Cena at huge WWE show,' says wrestling-mad BritWres stunner Jessy Maria

A lot of noise!

The rowdy atmosphere won’t just be contained to the ring on Saturday night – a near sell-out crowd will undoubtedly play their part in making sure the world knows how much the Brits love their wrestling.

Again, there has been no gathering of wrestling fans as large as Saturday’s crowd for an entire generation. It has been a long wait since 1992, and the Cardiff crowd aren’t likely to enjoy the show with polite applause.

If past UK and European crowds are anything to go by, expect football chants, some fairly industrial-grade jeering and even a beach ball or two. It’s time to party!

  • WWE's Ridge Holland on 'Hall of Fame worthy' Sheamus ahead of Clash at the Castle

A legend’s UK comeback

It would be an understatement to say Edge hasn’t wrestled on a major WWE show in the UK for a little while.

The iconic Canadian was a regular feature when the likes of Rebellion and Insurextion toured UK arenas around the turn of the millennium.

Since then, Edge has been forced into a lengthy retirement due to neck injuries and enjoyed one of the most memorable returns in modern history the best part of a decade later.

Many Brits will have never seen The Rated R Superstar perform live, so Saturday marks quite the occasion as he teams with fellow legend Rey Mystero to tackle Finn Balor and Damian Priest.

Tickets for WWE Clash at the Castle, taking place Saturday 3 September, are still available via Ticketmaster.
