BBC 'cancel cooking show after just one series'
‘It seems like Britain has fallen out of love with food’: BBC ‘cancels cooking show after just one series due to over-saturated market’
Britain’s Top Takeaways has reportedly been axed by the BBC after just one series.
The BBC2 eight-part show was led by Sara Cox and Darren Harriott and debuted last year.
It saw the UK’s independent takeaways battle it out to be crowned the nation’s best.
But it has reportedly been cancelled, becoming the latest cooking show to be axed due to over-saturation of the genre.
ITV’s Bad Chefs and Channel 4’s The Great Cookbook Challenge with Jamie Oliver were also ditched recently.
Cancelled: Britain’s Top Takeaways has reportedly been axed by the BBC after just one series
Speaking to The Sun, a TV insider said: ‘The spate of axed cooking shows on the schedules suggest viewers are getting fed up with them. It seems like Britain has fallen out of love with food.
‘It’s a saturated market with so much competition, so it’s no surprise really that some shows find it hard to stand out.
‘But it’s particularly tough for Sara and Darren’s one to be culled after just a series as it didn’t have time to grow.’
The show featured five eateries from the same sector competing in the specially-built Top Takeaway Kitchen each episode.
The food was delivered to local households, who decided the winner.
Sad news: The BBC2 eight-part show was led by Sara Cox and Darren Harriott and debuted last year
Launching the show last May, Sara said: ‘When I first heard about this show they had me at takeaway!
‘Especially in recent times, it has become something of an event in our house.
‘I’m thrilled to be celebrating the takeaway and finding the very best in Britain.
‘And if that means eating all the leftover chips and putting on half a stone, so be it.’
