BBC presenter Mike Liggins bids farewell as host announces exit after 35 years

Mike Liggins has revealed he is to leave the BBC after three decades working for at the corporation.

The BBC Look East presenter said he made the decision to leave and added it was “time for a change”.

Taking to his Twitter account on August 9, he wrote: “After 35 years, I’ve decided to leave the BBC. Time for a change.

“But what an adventure! I feel very lucky.”

He added: “I’ll be on Look East till Oct 6th… and after that I haven’t got a clue! For now, I just want to say thanks to all my colleagues and to you the viewer/follower. Mike x.”

The broadcaster was inundated with messages, as presenter Zeb Soanes penned: “All the very best, Mike, the sky doesn’t fall in once you hand over your pass, I promise you.”

Another commented: “A true broadcasting legend. I think I’ll remember you most fondly as World Cup Mike – no one did it better. You’ll be sorely missed.”

A third penned: “Wow, that really is the end of an era, gutted to be honest, you are genuinely a lovely guy. Loved welcoming you into our home between 6.30 and 7.00 weekday evenings.

“Good luck Mike in your next adventure and keep us posted on what it entails, Look East won’t be the same.”

Known affectionately as Liggo, Mike announced his departure on the social media platform now known as X.

The broadcaster began his career as a sports reporter on Mercia Sound in Coventry in 1984, before moving into news at ITV London Tonight.

He joined the BBC in 1987 and presented the Sunday morning breakfast programme on BBC Radio Norfolk – but is best known for his amiable style on screen, as well as an enduring talent for finding the region’s characters and quirks.

Robert Thompson, Senior Head of Content Production for East and London at the BBC, said: “Over the last 35 years, Mike has made more than 6,000 TV reports for Look East.

“He always gets to the heart of a story and has a brilliant way with words. Mike will be enormously missed, both by his colleagues and our viewers.”
