Chris Hemsworth, 39, and Elsa Pataky, 46, became the centre of some controversy as they shared their peculiar family traditions over a chocolate cake. As their twin sons Sasha and Tristan turned nine, Chris shared a snap on Instagram writing that there’s “only one way to eat cake in this house”.

Sharing with his 56 million followers, Chris looked on proudly with a mischievous grin as Elsa playfully smashed one of their sons’ faces into a chocolate cake, with their other son seemingly seconds away from joining him.

The doting dad gushed over his sons in the caption, writing: “Happy 9th birthday to my two little men!

“Only one way to eat cake in this house and that’s to have mum slam your head into it face first!!

Quoting one of his son’s, Chris added: “‘Hey mum I don’t like chocolate cake, I prefer vanilla’.

“Oh really son, what about now?”

Countless fans wished the boys happy birthday and applauded the family’s down-to-earth nature, tagging friends who “have the same tradition”, with Goldy3boyz declaring the prank “builds character”.

However, not everyone saw the humour as some wrote in to warn the actor against future pranks.

Blissful_butterfly74 wrote: “Yikes. Please be careful if you do this with a Bakery cake as some bakeries use wooden picks to stabilize the layers and could result in an eye injury.”

Lorydesj added: “Please tell me you didn’t waste a whole cake?”

Mary.weaver5 agreed, saying: “Yeah, not cool. I would never want another birthday cake in my life. Also, it’s rude to everyone else who might be eating that cake (or what’s left of it).

“It’s gross, rude, and a good way to ruin your kids’ birthdays for the rest of their lives.”

While the prank proved divisive, many fans could agree on one undeniably hilarious detail: the family dog captured in the background, sprinting away from the scene of the crime.

Chris and Elsa, who have been married since 2010, have three children: the twin boys and their older sister India.

The couple have largely kept their family life separate from their public personas, offering fans just small glimpses like this over social media.

The actor and the model are undeniably family-centred and even have matching tattoos commemorating their family.

Chris and Elsa each have five symbols from the Runic alphabet tattooed on their forearms, corresponding to the English letters C, E, I, T and S.

While Chris has been outspoken against tattoos, noting that they can interfere with his work on-screen, the model has a far bigger appreciation for them, with many declaring one to be a work of destiny.

Elsa has a sprinkling of smaller tattoos, with another runic symbol on her shoulder inspired by her love of Thor, the character played by her husband in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

However, the model actually got this inking when she was just 15, decades before meeting her husband.
