Dan Walker, 45, took part in Strictly Come Dancing last year and has made his opinions clear week in and week out on the 2022 series. The former BBC Breakfast presenter took to Twitter this evening to share that he believes Helen Skelton was the real winner of the show as she “danced through a whirlwind”.

Helen didn’t win but she has won!

Dan shared a picture of Helen alongside her Strictly partner Gorka Marquez in view of her 783,900 followers.

He captioned the post: “Well done Hamza… Helen didn’t win but she has won.

“She danced through a whirlwind, never mentioned it and remained dignified throughout.

“Her mum, dad and kids must be so proud of her. Well done @HelenSkelton & @gorkamarquez1 #Strictly.”

Many social media users took to the comments to share their views on tonight’s finale and the result of Hamza Yassin lifting the Glitterball.

Stevecathutch said: “Hamza has been the most consistent, impressive week in week out.

“Helen, though, has grown and grown every week and was probably the best on the night so massive credit to her for finding herself and her confidence. Very high standard, tough to call.”

Kate_scullin added: “I so wanted Helen to win as I think she was the one who had improved more through the series. But they were all good.”

Alisonstrong20 commented: “Helen and Gorka were my winners! Gorka looked gutted too bless him. He so deserves to win. X.”

Dan’s comment about Helen’s “whirlwind” year was referring to the Countryfile presenter’s separation from her husband of eight years, Richie Myler.

She announced in April that Richie had left the family home, just months after she had given birth to their third child.

The statement read: “Very sad to say that Richie and I are no longer a couple.

“He has left the family home. We will be doing our best to co-parent our small children.”

Helen has credited the Strictly experience for building her confidence, admitting she felt like she “won already” due to this.

When Helen was asked how it would feel to win this year’s show on It Takes Two, she admitted: “We would love to lift that trophy but I feel like we’ve already won it.

“We’ve had such an adventure, and I’ve said it before, you’re [Gorka] a credit to the show and a credit to your family.

“We’ve had the highs, the lows and everything in between and this is just a reminder for us to feel the fear and do it anyway.”

“Stretch yourself, test yourself and see what happens,” the 39-year-old added.

“If you surround yourself with good people, wonderful things happen.”

Helen battled it out in the final with Hamza Yassin, Fleur East and Molly Rainford, with Hamza lifting the Glitterball alongside Jowita Przystal.
