Development on Barbie began in the late 2000s, and figures such as Diablo Cody and Amy Schumer were attached to the project at various points.

Margot signed on as the movie’s star in 2019, and Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach were attached as screenwriters that same year.

The former of the pair was formally named as the project’s director in July of 2021.

Margot, who also serves as one of the feature’s producers, recently spoke to Vogue and opened up about pitching the project to Mattel.

The actress recalled stating: ‘We of course would want to honor the 60-year legacy that this brand has. But we have to acknowledge that there are a lot of people who aren’t fans of Barbie.’

The actress also expressed that she had never considered stepping into the doll’s shoes at any point in her career.

‘It wasn’t that I ever wanted to play Barbie, or dreamt of being Barbie, or anything like that. This is going to sound stupid, but I really didn’t even think about playing Barbie until years into developing the project,’ she said.

Gosling also spoke to the media outlet and revealed that his costar graciously left him ‘a pink present with a pink bow, from Barbie to Ken, every day while we were filming.’

Barbie is currently scheduled to be released on July 21.
