Gemma Owen left heartbroken as beloved horse dies following severe illness

Gemma Owen has opened up about her heartbreak on social media, after she was forced to say goodbye to her beloved horse Sirius Black, after he passed away following a severe illness on Friday.

The 19 year old dressage rider, who shot to fame on Love Island in 2022, revealed her shock on social media, as she asked for privacy at this difficult time.

Sharing a series of images of Sirius, a devastated Gemma wrote: “On Friday we lost my horse of a lifetime due to a sudden and severe illness words can’t describe how much this horse meant to me and my family.”

She then continued: “He was truly one in a million. Everyone who met Siz will know how amazing and caring his temperament was. He was taken far too soon, he has left us all heartbroken and in complete shock.

Before finally concluding: “You taught me so much Siz and I will never be able to thank you enough, you brought so much joy and happiness to our lives and you’ll never be replaced. I love you endlessly.”

Immediately following the announcement, friends and fans rushed to the comments to offer their condolences to Gemma, as she grieved for the beloved family member that had been taken too soon.

New mum, Molly-Mae Hague commented: "Gemma I’m so sorry, this is beyond heartbreaking. Stay strong beautiful.”

While Love Island star Lucinda Strafford added: “I am so sorry angel for your loss. Sending lots of love”

British equestrian champion and olympic athlete Yasmin Ingham also expressed similar sentiments as she wrote: “So sorry to hear”

Equestrian influencer Esme Higgs also paid her respects as she commented: “Oh Gemma I’m so sorry to hear this, sending love.”

Sirius, affectionately known to Gemma as Siz, was 17 years old at the time of his death, and had been a firm fixture in Gemma’s life since the age of 11 when she began competing with him at tournaments all around the world.

The star, also revealed how highly she thought of her equine companion when she began dating Luca Bish last year, as she was keen to make sure her boyfriend had the seal of approval from Sirius before embarking on a serious relationship.

Sadly, despite gaining his approval, the couple weren’t to last, with Gemma and Luca calling time on their relationship mere months after leaving the Love Island villa.

During her enduring partnership with Sirius, Gemma competed at the European Championships 2021, where she represented Britain in the youth ranks in Oliva, Spain. Her team came in sixth place.

Gemma has competed with Sirius in multiple national competitions and scored a personal best at Prix St Georges in January 2022.

More recently, before entering the villa last Summer, Gemma finished third in team and individual young rider tests at Myerscough Premier League in March the same year.
