Gethin Jones, 47, has revealed he was ready to leave behind fame and focus on a career outside of TV, before landing a role as a presenter on BBC’s Morning Live.

The Welsh-born star shared how during lockdown he had signed up for a Masters degree and was ready to move on to the “next chapter”, but instead signed up for the position of daytime host on the public broadcaster.

He exclusively told Express.co.uk: “I was gonna quit TV a couple of years ago and Morning Live came about, and I fell in love with it.

“So I’m hanging around for as long as they ask me!”

Speaking on why he loves the programme, Gethin shared it is down to the incredible support they get from the audience at home.

He continued: “We have such an amazing audience. You know there was a little correction on air today and it was just purely something to do with a picture that wasn’t quite right.

“But the audience was straight on it and I think we’re really good at owning our mistakes.”

Gethin also praised how the show handles tough subject matters in a balanced manner.

He added: “I think we have taken on, you know, everyday cost of living crisis, mental health issues and thought, ‘How would you talk about it in a coffee shop?’

“And how would you talk about it is finding that balance between putting a smile on people’s faces, whilst talking about pretty serious issues right now.”

The presenter recently made headlines when he took part in a 24-hour dance session to raise money for Comic Relief.

Gethin admitted that the challenge was “tough” but rewarding: “Trying to get down the stairs the next day was fun. It took me about an hour! Physically, I was in absolute bits.

“I think that we were just flying on elation. We were really blown away by the support and the messages throughout the 24 hours on iPlayer were extraordinary – whether it was 8pm or 4am.

“When I saw those donations come in, it just meant the world. We were kept going by that support.”

Discussing the donation total, Gethin added: “I can’t believe it. We talk about the cost of living crisis on Morning Live every day and how hard things are and the choices that people are making but then, those same people have dipped into their pockets to help those who are really struggling. Donations go where they need to go.

“On the show on Friday, the total was going up so far and it was incredibly emotional. I haven’t cried that much on telly since Konnie Huq waxed my chest on Blue Peter.”

When he’s not on the telly, the Cardiff-born presenter is a keen adventurer and enjoys spending time outdoors, whether that’s playing sports or exploring new hiking trails.

Gethin is an advocate for getting outside, which reflects the North Ridge brand’s ethos perfectly, as he has joined the brand as an ambassador.

“I’ve always been such a fan of the brand, and the North Ridge range allows you to do a bit of everything, whether that’s climbing a mountain, going on a bike ride or a long-distance trek, there’s something for every activity.

“I’m looking forward to the new experiences I’m going to have with this partnership. North Ridge makes you want to push your limits, do different things, and go to new places seeking new adventures – I can’t wait to try out all the new kit!”
