Halle Berry sings her heart out in Little Mermaid live-action trailer

The first official trailer for Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid has gripped fans online after it was shown at the Oscars on Sunday.

The long-awaited remake is set for a May 26 release after a string of successful reenvisionings from Disney, including Cruella, starring Emma Stone; Beauty and the Beast starring Emma Watson and Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent franchise.

During Sunday night's Academy Awards ceremony, which also saw Michelle Yeoh walk away with the best actress award, the film’s leading stars, Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy took to the stage to introduce the trailer.

Halle plays the red-haired singing mermaid who dreams of a life on the land, while Melissa steps into the shoes, or tentacles in this case, of sea witch Ursula.

The trailer plays out like the 1989 animated original, with Jonah Hauer-King’s Prince Eric falling into the sea during a storm.

He is rescued and returned to land by Ariel, as he catches a glimpse of her on the sand before she flees into the water.

The following shots show Ariel returning to her home, where she is joined by Flounder, played by Jacob Tremblay, and reprimanded by her father, Javier Bardem’s King Triton, for “breaking the rules” by “going to the above world.”

“Your obsession with humans has to stop,” he tells her, to which Ariel replies: “I just want to know more about them.”

Like the original, Ariel turns to the sea witch Ursula for assistance and asks whether it’s possible to be turned into a human.

“That's what I live for,” Ursula replies with a smirk before trapping Ariel with her glowing tentacles.

As a human, Ariel is joined by seagull friend Scuttle, played by Awkwafina, and her Jamaican-inspired Crab pal, Sebastian, played by Hamilton’s Daveed Diggs.

In order to stay human, Ariel must make Eric fall in love with her, though that won’t be easy, thanks to Ursula’s meddling.

Fans have been reacting to the trailer online, with many completely starstruck by how perfectly Halle portrays the mermaid princess, singing her heart out as the trailer comes to a climax.

“Gotta admit that every live action disney movie is not perfect but this movie looks incredible and gorgeous in a way i can’t explain it, im pumped for this movie and it’s performances!” one person wrote.

Another said: “Beyond excited. This is the first remake I am going to actual see in the theaters and it happens to be my favourite Disney Movie. It’s sad the show at Disney World Hollywood Studios still isn’t opening. Hopefully this movie will change that regardless of the version used.”

“She sounds beautiful. Thank goodness the movie can actually be bright and colorful, that first poster really made me concerned this movie would lose a lot of its color. Hopefully the land scenes will just be as stunning as the ocean scenes,” another said, with someone else adding, “I’m super duper excited for this movie!!! I’m excited to see more of Ariel and I think I’m even more excited to see Melissa McCarthy as Ursula!!!”
