Awkward: Ariana stunned viewers with her rap performance celebrating female nominees last Sunday

Warning – contains bad language

Jamie expressed that the only thing ‘shocking’ to the audience were the close-up camera angles.

However, when the camera cut to her, the actress was unfazed: ‘I was into the music, and I was having a great time.’

Debose referenced the hilarious performance while at the 2023 SAG Awards on Sunday as she presented with Diego Luna, and said, ‘Diego, do the thing’

She also defended her performance after it was branded ‘awkward’ and ‘painful’ by viewers.

Speaking to Zoe Ball on her Radio 2 Breakfast Show, she poked fun at the backlash by saying the host was ‘one of the few’ who loved her performance.

In the interview, which will be broadcast on Monday, the Oscar winner explained that she was told her performance would ‘celebrate women,’ and she ‘had a blast’ despite viewers’ negative reaction.

‘And we did that and it was fun, not going to lie, I had a blast. So awesome.’

The other star mentioned in the rap, Angela Bassett, broke her silence on the song, which included that iconic line about the actress ‘doing the thing’.

Bassett revealed that she messaged the West Side Story actress to check in and ask if she was okay.

Angela told Variety at the 54th NAACP Awards about the aftermath, saying: ‘I DM’d her last night.

‘I just wanted to make sure she was okay because, you know, it’s a lot of attention. And she is A-Okay.

The Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star also said that she thought the moment was ‘beautiful’.

She also teasingly quoted Ariana, during her acceptance speech, and said: ‘I guess Angela Bassett did the thing!’ to cheers from the audience.

Ariana recently issued her first public statement regarding what has quickly gone down as arguably the most embarrassing opening performance in 76-years of rich and varied BAFTA history.

The apparent outrage prompted a well-meaning DeBose to deactivate her Twitter account, but the star was back online after spotting a meme account devoted to her notorious performance on Instagram.

Using one of the performance’s memorable lyrics, one meme features a shot of former US President George W. Bush being told of the 9/11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center by former Chief Of Staff Andy Card.

The image, perhaps one of the defining moments from the 2001 tragedy, is superimposed with the words: ‘Sir, Angela Bassett did the thing.’

Responding to the lighthearted post on Tuesday, DeBose wrote: ‘Honestly, I love this.’
