Paul Burrell shares ‘life changing’ cancer diagnosis age 64

Paul Burrell has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The former butler to the late Princess Diana announced the news today, Monday 30 January, on Lorraine.

Paul acted as Diana's butler from 1987 up until her death ten years later.

The news of his diagnosis comes shortly after Prince Harry hit out at his mother's former aid for "milking" Diana's death by releasing a book about her.

Paul's cancer was discovered after he had to undergo a medical examination for a television show he was doing.

His PSA test came up "surprisingly high", so he went to his doctor who advised he go for an MRI.

It was upon receiving and MRI that a "shadow" was found on his prostate.

He was diagnosed last summer and is currently taking hormone therapy in a bid to battle the illness.

Paul told Lorraine Kelly: "I'm on an emotional, education rollercoaster. Ups and downs. Not knowing where I'm going to be the next minute."

In the wake of his tragic diagnosis, Paul is campaigning for other men to have their prostate checked.

"There are thousands of men out there like me who have no symptoms and don't realise what's happening and it could be too late," he said.

"My message is: I was lucky. I was really lucky that they caught it. […] Men out there can go to the doctors and ask for a PSA test."

According to the NHS, a PSA test is a blood test to help detect prostate cancer. While it can help with detection, the NHS further notes that the test is "not perfect and will not find all prostate cancers".

The last time Paul was on Lorraine, the 64 year old discussed Harry and Meghan Markle's relationship as he explained why he thought the Duke of Sussex was drawn to the American star.

At the time of their chat at the begging of the month, Paul said he didn't think there would have been such a big family fall out had Princess Diana still been alive.

“It wouldn’t have happened,” he told Lorraine. “It wouldn’t have happened, for instance, if Harry married Chelsy Davy or Cressida Bonas. I don’t think all of this would have happened.”

Paul went on: “It’s because he married a 36 year old woman who whispered in his ear, ‘I want to change the world’. His mother was 36 when she died, and I think Harry was hearing his mother’s voice come through.

“It’s all mixed up in Diana. Diana is a constant in both boys’ lives.”
