Paul O’Grady funeral mourners erupt into laughter after music gaffe

Paul O'Grady: Well-wishers line street for funeral in Kent

The Vicar conducting the service at Paul O’Grady’s funeral has revealed that one particular instrument malfunctioned during the event. The mishap turned into a “moment of fun” for mourners.

Reverend Canon Roger Martin confirmed that the organ, which has to be pumped by hand, took a turn during a hymn at Paul O’Grady’s funeral, which took place today, April 20, in Kent.

He said: “We tried it before the service started, you have to pump and keep it up at a certain level and something has gone wrong right at the wrong moment. We were able to turn it into a moment of fun.”

Vicar Martin described the funeral as a “very fitting send-off” to Paul O’Grady. Following the private service, the vicar told the PA news agency: “The mood was very jolly. There were some recordings of Paul, favourite clips, a good selection of varied music, it was light-hearted. It was a moving occasion.”

He later added: “It was a very fitting send-off.” Mr Martin described the eulogy from actor and comedian Julian Clary as “very entertaining. He spoke quite a lot about their stage life together,” he said.
