Placebo frontman Brian Molko shuts down gig over crowd using phones

Placebo frontman Brian Molko briefly shut down the band’s Dublin gig at the 3Arena on Monday night after the audience refused to stop recording the show on their phones.

While no guidelines had been issued to attendees in advance, an announcement was seemingly made in the arena before the show.

However, many people missed it as when the band took to the stage phones were whipped out only to be shot down by security.

After performing their 2022 hit Hugz Brian addressed the crowd to acknowledge that some of them seemed to have missed the phone announcement.

Explaining that it prevented other people seeing the show if they were recording he also said that it was the end of the tour and they didn’t have as much patience.

He went on to say that aside from anything else people using their phones at gigs really “p***** them off” and asked people to put them in their pockets.

While the few that had been recording seemed to comply he broke into another 2022 hit, Happy Birthday in the Sky, which was the fifth song of the night.

However, he stopped the song after just a few bars to single out someone in the crowd who was recording.

Addressing him and the crowd directly, an irate Brian said that the man had no respect for the band.

As the crowd became more angsty Brian added that the show could go on like this [stalled] or as it was meant to.

The person in question seemed to keep recording as Brian spoke and an awkward couple of minutes ensued before the man put his phone away and the band restarted the song.

Despite this, two members of security were seen telling people that it would be OK to take photos for the last couple of songs.

When one girl misunderstood them and took out her phone the security berated her and told her: “I said at the end.”

Following the early glitch the gig was drama free as the band treated the crowd to 23 of their tracks including their cover of the Kate Bush classic Running Up That Hill.
