Priyanka Chopra 'cried' after she was told she wasn't 'sample sized'

Priyanka Chopra reveals she ‘cried’ to husband Nick Jonas after she was told she wasn’t ‘sample-sized’: ‘I was hurt’

Priyanka Chopra reveals how she was reduced to tears after being told she was not a ‘sample sized.’

Speaking at SXSW, Chopra said she ‘cried’ to her husband Nick Jonas after hearing hurtful body shaming comments.

‘Someone told me yesterday that I wasn’t sample-sized… I was hurt and I discussed it with my family and I cried to my husband [Nick Jonas], and my team, and I felt really bad about the fact that I’m not sample size, and that’s a problem, apparently, and most of us are not and sample size is size 2,’ she told Jennifer Salke, the head of Amazon Studios, according to People.

The actress, 40, also described how she has learned to lean on people who genuinely ‘want to see you smile’ as she weathers hurtful remarks made about her and her loved ones.

‘I have had times when I may have said something, and it’s been misconstrued, and you see people saying the meanest and nastiest things not just about me, about my child, about my family members, and I think sometimes people forget you are even human,’ she added.

‘And those pressures – it’s inexplicable. I can’t explain how it feels when you are sitting down on your couch and you just feel the world coming at you because people have forgotten that you are human.’

‘I think what you have to do is surround yourself with people who love you and surround yourself with people who care about you, and not about what you can bring to the table and not about what you can do for me. People who want to see you smile and be enriched,’ she said. ‘It doesn’t have to be a room full of people – I can count them on my hands.’

During the conversation with Salke, Priyanka also revealed that she was paid the same as her male co-star, Richard Madden, on her upcoming Prime series Citadel.

‘I’ve been working in the entertainment industry for 22 years. I have done about 70-plus features, and two TV shows,’ she said. ‘When I did Citadel, I had pay parity with my male actor for the first time in 22 years.’

In many cases, pay parity is used to describe equal pay for work of equal value for employees, regardless of gender, race, sexuality, or nationality.

‘I’m laughing about this, but it’s kind of nuts,’ she added. ‘I put in the same amount of investment and work, but I get paid much less. But the ease in which Amazon Studios said, “That’s what you deserve, you are co-leads, that’s just fair,” and I was like, “You’re right, it’s fair.”‘

She got direct with Salke, asking her if that happened because a woman is running the studio.

‘There was no question to me that it was the absolute right thing to do,’ Salke admitted.

The head of Amazon Studios continued, ‘I see that change and find it inspiring. It takes a woman in the room to make space for stepping back, taking a pause – let’s gut-check this.’

Before leaving for SXSW, Priyanka enjoyed a date night with her husband on Thursday at the South Asian Excellence pre-Oscars bash held at the Paramount Studio Lot in Los Angeles.

Priyanka and Mindy Kaling co-hosted the celebration for Academy Award-nominated talent behind films like RRR, Turning Red, All That Breathes, The Elephant Whisperers, and Everything Everywhere All At Once.

‘This is iconic. And to be able to look around me, and see my peers and colleagues that have hustled and pounded the pavement for years, and to be able to have them receive a moment that’s just theirs, makes me like, cry,’ Chopra told ET.

‘This night is about the nominees, and you see a lot of them coming. This’ll be about giving them the stage and giving them a moment.

‘Showcasing a little bit of the movies and championing them as the Oscars come back.’

As for the married couple of four years’ 14-month-old daughter Malti Marie, the Bulgari brand ambassador said: ‘She’s asleep.

‘Thank God. Can you imagine? No, tonight’s daddy and mommy’s night out.’
