Queens final journey starts with moving applause as Princess Anne accompanies coffin

The Queen has embarked on her final journey back home to London after a night in St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh, where over 26,000 people came to pay their respects following her death on 8 September.

A round of applause was heard by the crowds lining the walls of the cathedral as the coffin of the Queen was placed into a car before being driven out of the grounds and down the Royal Mile.

The sound of pipes filled the streets as a band paraded up to Edinburgh Castle shortly after the Queen’s departure. While a guard of honour by the King’s Bodyguard for Scotland and pipers followed the Cortege towards Edinburgh Castle and on to the airport.

Princess Anne, 72, is dutifully accompanying Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's coffin as they'll be driven 40 minutes to Edinburgh Airport.

Royal Regiment of Scotland will greet the late Queen and her daughter at the airport with a royal salute.

A bearer party from the Royal Air Force will then proceed to carry the coffin onto the RAF Globemaster C-17 flight.

From there, the plane will make its way to London, landing at RAF Northolt at approximately 6.55pm this evening.

This will be the last time the Queen will be leaving Scotland, after she spent the majority of the summer in her home in Balmoral.

A huge crowd of well-wishers are expected to be gathered at the airport, awaiting the Queen's return home. A further guard of honour will also be formed by the King's Guard as the coffin comes through the Grand Entrance.

The state hearse will then convey the Queen to Buckingham Palace, taking the A40, Eastbourne Terrace, Lancaster Gate, Bayswater Road, Marble Arch, Park Lane, Hyde Park Corner and Constitution Hill.

King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla will be at Buckingham Palace to receive the coffin, alongside the Prince and Princess of Wales.

Meanwhile, Princess Beatrice has already arrived at Buckingham Palace ahead of the Queen’s coffin. A carrycot could also be seen in the back seat of the grey Range Rover.

The Queen will rest the Bow Room overnight before being moved to Westminster Hall, where she will be open to the public 24 hours a day from 5pm on Wednesday 14 September until 6:30am on Monday 19 September – on which day her funeral will take place.
