Sophie Ellis-Bextor details real reason she turned down Eurovision judging role
Eurovision: Inside the dress rehearsal in Liverpool
Sophie Ellis-Bextor was approached to be part of the Eurovision Song Contest judging panel in 2019 but decided not to participate.
Detailing why in an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, the Murder on the Dancefloor hitmaker explained: “It was very soon after I’d had my last baby, Mickey.
“The judging commitments were just too much time away from him when he would have been only a few weeks old.”
Sophie was still feeding Mickey at the time and Eurovision bosses would not let her take him with her.
The mother-of-five previously joked that she’s “pretty sure the baby would have been impartial”.
Speaking to Radio Times last year, she continued: “You know what, I think part of what I like about Eurovision is that it has very much got its rules… it’s kooky.
“We weren’t going to be allowed to speak while we were watching it either and I thought, ‘I can’t watch Eurovision in silence’.”
Despite turning down that role years ago, Sophie now has a part to play in this year’s celebrations.
She will be hosting the Ultimate Home of Eurovision which offers fans the chance to have a one-night stay in a Liverpool apartment complete with karaoke, fancy dress and a mixologist.

The lucky guests will get the chance to hang out with Sophie and enjoy a Eurovision party like no other.
She also performed in front of thousands of fans at the EuroVillage on Friday along with Fleur East and Katrina from Katrina and the Waves. The rock band won Eurovision for the UK in 1997.
When we asked Sophie whether she would ever represent the UK herself, she admitted she is hesitant due to our notoriously “mixed reception”.
She said: “I think I’d always rather just support from the wings and just enjoy the whole spectacle of it. I don’t really want to be one of the ones that comes home with a heavy head. I’d go if I knew I was gonna be on the right side of the leaderboard.”
