William’s subtle Diana tribute spotted as he and Kate dress to the nines for Palace party

Prince William paid a touching tribute toPrincess Diana as he attended a palace garden party followingKing Charles’ Coronation.

The Prince of Wales, 40, wore his late mother’s favourite flowers – forget-me-nots – pinned to his lapel for the event at Buckingham Palace this week.

The subtle tribute perfectly complemented William’s baby blue tie – as well as wifeKate Middleton’s outfit.

The garden party, held as part of the celebrations following King Charles andQueen Consort Camilla’s Coronation at Westminster Abbey on Saturday, was attended by William and Kate, 41, as well asPrince Edward and his wifeSophie, Duchess of Edinburgh.

William’s tribute to Diana – who died in 1997, aged 36, from injuries sustained in a Paris car crash – comes after her sons have used the flowers to commemorate her on several previous occasions.

Prince Harry has regularly featured forget-me-nots at poignant moments in his life – including on Meghan Markle's first mother's day in 2019.

The flowers also featured in Meghan’s bouquet on the couple’swedding day in May 2018.

And in 2020, the couple visited a Los Angeles preschool to plant the flowers on the 23rd anniversary of Diana's death.

And when Kensington Palace’s Sunken Gardens – one of Princess Diana’s favourite spots – was made over in 2021, a hundred forget-me-nots were planted.

Earlier this week, hundreds of people were welcomed into the grounds of Buckingham Palace for a garden party which celebrated the work of volunteers, military personnel and members of the public during King Charles’ Coronation.

William and Kate were introduced to representatives from the Scouts, Maternal Mental Health Alliance and the South Wales Police.

But the Prince of Wales was soonushered over to meet Dame Elizabeth Watts, a 93-year-old who has lived through the past three coronations and slept on the pavement for three nights to seeQueen Elizabeth II officially crowned in 1953.

Dame Elizabeth, from Solihull, added: “I had measles for George’s coronation when I was seven years old. Of course, there was no television then so I couldn’t watch it but we had an accumulator radio.”

Speaking about Charles’s coronation, she said: “We watched the coronation at home, on Sunday we had a street party and on Monday I had to recuperate ready to come here.”

For the garden party, Kate, 41,recycled her beautiful blue Elie Saab dress – which she had previously worn toRoyal Ascot in 2019. She completed the sustainable ensemble with a Philip Treacy hat with floral adornments and the same silver clutch bag.

The event followed Saturday’s historic Coronation, which saw 20.4 million people tune in to watch Charles crowned King.

And as part of the celebrations, a series of events took place up and down the country across the weekend, including theCoronation Concert andThe Big Help Out.

A set of official portraits was also released on Monday to help mark the occasion – with the four photographs, taken in Buckingham Palace's Throne Room, giving an insight into thenew King’s idea of a slimmed-down monarchy.
