Windswept royals hold on to their hats at Royal Garter ceremony

The Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, and Sophie Wessex, the Duchess of Edinburgh were positively beaming as they joined the rest of the Royal Family at the Order of the Garter service today, Monday 19 June, but it was an incredibly windy affair.

The two women looked elegant as they showed off their stylish looks in the London sunshine, and while Prince William, the King, Queen Camilla and the Duke of Edinburgh all wore traditional dress for the occasion, they couldn't stop holding on to their hats in the blustery weather.

As the senior Royals arrived at St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle one by one, they all clutched on to their traditional headdresses for fear of them blowing away.

Even the plumes billowed in the wind as the group showed off their cloaks to excited onlookers.

Mum-of-three Kate, 41, had also chosen a look that seemed to convey a throwback to the former Princess of Wales, Princess Diana.

The beloved People's Princess often rocked a stunning polka dot outfit throughout the 1980s and 90s, as it was a popular trend for the time, and Kate has brought it back too.

As thousands of royal fans waited for a sighting of the procession along the route outside Windsor Castle, the princess geared up for the historic 700-year tradition in a flowing chiffon midi dress.

The Alessandra Rich gown featured puffed sleeves and a fitted waist panel, and the princess opted for a matching black and white feathered formal hat by Phillip Treacy.

She chose polka dot heels, which were also strikingly similar to the ones Diana wore in her day, and an understated clutch bag to finish.

The princess then opted to accessorise with a pearl bracelet, matching drop earrings, and her statement engagement ring to complete the look.

Kate wore her brunette locks plaited into an elegant low bun, and looked radiant in smokey eyeshadow, mulberry lipstick and a sweep of bronzer on her cheeks.

Sophie, 58, meanwhile, looked the total opposite in a bold pink and green floral summer dress.

Pairing the outfit with a pair of white and silver mid heels and a bright scarf for the occasion, the Duchess finished off her look with a hat styled to appear like an under-sea anemone or tropical pink and blue flower.

With her hair also swept back into a bun, the two Royals were all smiles as they chatted and waited for the main players in the day – their husbands and the King, Queen Camilla and Princess Anne, the Princess Royal.

The Order of the Garter was set up by King Edward III in 1348 and the now-historic tradition was originally inspired by the legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.

The annual service recognises contributions of great public service from Lords and Ladies in the UK.

The Royals have been busy over the last few days, as only two days earlier they celebrated the King's official birthday with Trooping the Colour at Buckingham Palace.

William and Kate's three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis were all in attendance in matching red and black outfits, and as usual the youngest prince stole the show with his cute antics and hilarious waving to the public.

Princess Charlotte even appeared to be getting fed up after Duchess Sophie told her something on the balcony.
