X Factor’s Tesco Mary looks unrecognisable 13 years after show following 6st weight loss

X Factor sensation Mary Byrne is worlds away from the performer we knew up on stage 13 years ago.

Dubbed 'Tesco Mary' by fans of the ITV show, which has been off air since 2018, her social media accounts boast a complete and utter transformation from the star, who's managed to shed six stone in weight.

Gone is the high ponytail and dark brown fringe too, with the 63 year old now wearing a swept-to-the-side blonde look.

The Irish singer, who went on to play Mediterranean cruise ships alongside Sir Cliff Richard, originally wowed the likes of Simon Cowell, Cheryl, Louis Walsh and Katy Perry with her version of Tom Jones tune 'I Who Have Nothing' in 2010.

Discussing her life post-X Factor, Mary previously told RSVP magazine that she suffered from depression.

"Suffering from depression is very serious and getting that feeling of dread and panic can have a serious knock on affect in your life. When you go through those dark moments, you either grow from them or you just lie down and die," she said.

"I couldn't lie down and die because there is too much spirit in me. I don't see depression as a weakness, I see it as a challenge to prove to myself that I am a strong woman and I can get through this. That is what life should be about."

Despite chasing her musical dreams, the TV star did confess to missing her Tesco pals.

"I work mainly at nights and there are times, especially during the day, that I really miss being on the tills. I miss the camaraderie and the friends and chatting to the customers and the craic we used to have."

Joining the Loose Women five years ago, Mary informed host Kaye Adams and panelist Denise Van Outen that her chronic arthritis had improved since losing "half a person" in weight.

"When I was on The X Factor I was diagnosed with an under-active thyroid. I was sick all the time and they couldn't work out what was wrong with me.

"For years I used to say I'm happy with what I am, but the problems start as you get older and that's what I found," she reflected.

"I have chronic arthritis in my left knee, I have a bandage on now."

Most recently, Mary was rushed to hospital a couple of months ago after a horror car collision sparked by a deer running into the road – she was touring the UK with the cast of Menopause the Musical 2.

"It was like an explosion. That's what it sounded like. All I could see was people being thrown from one end of the bus to the other," she told the Irish Sun.

"[It was] the most frightening thing that has ever happened to me."
