Beckham's faux pas at Kate and William's wedding was caught on camera

David Beckham’s faux pas at Kate and William’s wedding! It was caught on camera… (before courtiers had a quiet word and put him right)

  • David wore his OBE – but it wasn’t in the right place on his suit
  • He switched it before the ceremony, which took place 12 years ago this weekend

There are are many times in life where you don’t want slip up – especially at a royal wedding being watched by millions across the world.

And although David Beckham looked rather suave in his Ralph Lauren morning suit, he did make a small error at William and Kate’s wedding on 29 April 2011.

The ex-footballer wore his Order of the British Empire medal with confidence – except that it was displayed on the wrong side.

Traditionally, they are worn on the left lapel along with most other medals. David, however, arrived at the wedding ceremony with it on his right!

While few may have noticed, eagled-eyed commentators covering the royal wedding certainly did and pointed out the error in their broadcasts.

However it seemed that David had rectified his faux pas before the ceremony had begun, after courtiers informed him of the correct way to wear it.

The football star received the OBE from the Queen in 2003 for his services to football, including becoming the captain of the England team in 2000, a title he held for six years.

A video clip emerged in September last year from their hour-and-a-half long documentary The Real Beckhams, which showed how excited David and Victoria were to meet the Queen.

David told the cameras: ‘It’s quite amazing really because you hear about all the other OBEs through the years and one of them was Bobby Charlton and he was my idol and my dad’s idol.’

‘To hear I was receiving one of them,’ he began. ‘It first hit me when I got a letter that said David Beckham OBE on it. It’s amazing.

‘I was going to take my mum and dad, I know they would appreciate it but I think my nan and grandad, it’s going to be an amazing experience for them. My nan’s a big royal fan so it’s nice for them.’

David spoke about his excitement: ‘To hear I was receiving one of them,’ he began. ‘It first hit me when I got a letter that said David Beckham OBE on it. It’s amazing’

He went on to recall his previous encounter with Her Majesty: ‘I met the Queen at the Commonwealth Games when I opened that in Manchester. She was lovely.’

David made headlines last year as he was spotted waiting in the queue to pay his respects to the late Queen, who was lying in state at Westminster Hall. He waited for 13 hours despite being offered the chance to jump ahead by an MP.

‘We all want to be here together. We all want to experience something where we celebrate the amazing life of our Queen and I think something like this today is meant to be shared together,’ he told BBC  News.
