Full list of shops closing down in August including B&M and Boots – is your local store shutting? | The Sun

MORE than a dozen high street shops are set to close their doors for good next month.

Those set to shut include B&M and Boots sites in various areas of the country.

The closures come after a particularly difficult time for the retail and hospitality industry with hundreds of shops shutting their doors already this year.

It's not just shops either, food and pub chains have also been hit, resulting in brands like Wetherspoons and Frankie & Benny's closing.

Following the pandemic businesses were struggling to bounce back anyway, only to then be hit by soaring energy bills.

At the same time the cost of living has been rising, leading to shoppers cutting back on non-essential spending.

Brick and mortar stores have also seen a lack of footfall due to consumer habits switching to online shopping.

Although, some chains have managed to defy high street troubles and are actually set to open new shops.

These include discount chains like Poundland which is set to open 15 shops in the coming weeks and Greggs which is aiming to open 150 new sites this year.

Just under 19 shops are set to pull the shutters down one last time next month.

Boots

Boots has begun  closing down the first of 300 stores this week, with more to follow this summer and into autumn.

The popular pharmacy chain has confirmed the locations of nine stores which will be shutting their doors for good.

It comes as part of wider closure plans that will see the chain's number of shops reduced from 2,200 to 1,900.

Boots has confirmed that all staff working in these locations will be offered alternative roles.

One of the sites announced so far is set to close in August.

Hamlet Court Road in Westcliff-on-Sea will be shutting its doors on August 1.

B&M

B&M has closed a number of stores in recent months, with some closing for good and some relocating to other sites.

In August a total of two shops will be closing for the last time.

The store at Kiln Lane in Reading will shut on Saturday, August 19.

However, shoppers will be able to take advantage of a "bigger and better" store just down the road in Brunel Retail Park.

The new 22,000 square foot store which boasts a huge garden centre will open its doors to customers at 8am on Saturday, August 26.

B&M is also temporarily closing its store at Glasgow Forge store on Sunday, August 20.

The shop is shutting to allow for refurbishment and expansion works to complete.

Following this, the new store will open back up to customers at 8am on Saturday, August 26.

Iceland

Supermarket chain Iceland has already pulled down the shutters on just under a dozen shops this year.

But the retailer, which operates around 500 branches currently, plans to make one further closure in August.

Iceland will be shutting its branch in Fife on August 12.

It will then be closing another supermarket in September.

It comes following a string of closures in various areas of the country in recent months, including Wales, Bristol and the Isle of Wight.

New Look

High street fashion chain New Look is set to shut down another two stores within weeks following a string of closures earlier this year.

It will close its store at Kings Chase Shopping Centre in Bristol on Wednesday, August 9.

It comes after a post on the Kings Chase Shopping Centre Facebook page read: "Sadly, after many years with us here at Kings Chase, New Look will be closing their doors for the final time on Wednesday 9th August.

"We would like to thank Carol and the New Look Kingswood team for their service over the years and we wish them all the very best for the future."

Meanwhile, its branch in the Crossgates Shopping Centre, Leeds, is pulling down its shutters for the final time at the end of August.

Fashion retailer New Look has already closed several stores this year after it pulled down the shutters on 85 branches in 2018.

That said, New Look did open several shops across the UK in November 2022.

Argos

Argos will be pulling the shutters down on a total of seven shops next month.

The popular retailer has already closed a number of its UK stores as part of its plan to move away from the high street.

Argos, which is owned by Sainsbury's has a plan to close 100 stores across the UK in 2023/24 and focus on expanding its presence in supermarkets.

Sainsbury's is moving many standalone stores into bigger Sainsbury's supermarkets as part of their strategy.

The homeware chain has confirmed to The Sun that Grimsby Alexandria Argos is due to relocate to Sainsbury's on August 9 and 10.

And Scunthorpe Argos is due to relocate on August 15 and 16.

The retailer will also be closing its store in St Stephen's shopping centre in Hull on August 8.

A new branch in Sainsbury's Hessle will open the following day on August 9.

Meanwhile the Riverside store in Norwich and the Parc Plaza branch in Bridgend are also set to close in August but no date has been confirmed as yet.

It has already shut 45 branches in the last 12 months and opened up 25 branches inside Sainsbury's stores.

Co-op

Supermarket chain Co-op is also set to shut down more branches following a string of closures earlier this year.

The chain's branch in Mildenhall Road, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, is pulling down its shutters for good on August 19.

Commenting on the Bury closure, a spokesperson for the business said it "regularly reviews all of its sites and decisions regarding any store are only taken after careful consideration".

It comes after Co-op shut a number of other branches earlier this year with others mooted for closure.

The chain closed its branch in Castle House, Sheffield, on July 22, with nearby stores in Broad Lane and Glossop Road remaining open.

It previously closed its branch in Princess Drive, Grantham, in January while its store in Linthorpe Village, Middlesbrough closed the same month.

Asda pharmacies

Asda has revealed the exact date when several of its pharmacies will close for good.

It comes after the grocer announced a proposal to close seven of its 254 in-store pharmacies in January.

Asda said it would look to close these pharmacies because of low customer usage.

The supermarket consulted on the move and confirmed the closures at the end of April but didn't say when the pharmacies would shut for good.

The following seven pharmacies will close on August 3:

  • Southampton
  • Seaham
  • Feltham
  • Blackburn
  • Adel
  • West Bradford
  • Weston-Super-Mare

The closure of the seven Asda pharmacies is expected to affect 48 hourly-paid colleagues and 14 pharmacists.

In January, Asda said it would do everything it could to redeploy affected staff in other local branches.

Asda Living

Asda has also confirmed that it will close another huge furniture store within weeks.

The Asda Living shop in Eastgate Retail Park, Bristol, is also set to close this summer, but an exact date has not yet been confirmed.

Another shop will also be pulling down the shutter on July 31.

A spokesperson for the supermarket giant previously said that stores had been "running at a loss for a number of years".

Asda Living stores sell a range of furniture, electronics, toys, homeware, and health and beauty products.

There are currently 33 of these stores across the UK, including in Maidstone, Lincoln and Leeds.

Meanwhile, here are all the high street brands which are closing this week.

Plus, the full list of 98 banks closing within weeks including HSBC and Barclays.
