I'm a lash expert – here's 5 mistakes you're making that could be harming your HEALTH | The Sun

CURLING, glueing and coating – we do all sorts of things to our eyelashes.

The hairs and eyes are an incredibly delicate area of the body, yet we aren’t afraid to tug them around with all sorts of treatments.

A beauty expert Nouveau Lashes, part of the HD Brows brand, has revealed what habits could be not only damaging your health, but your beauty.

1. Rubbing your eyes

Has your mum ever snapped at you to “stop rubbing your eyes”?

It turns out she was right to tell you off, because one of the most frequent mistakes many of us are making is “rubbing our eyes too vigorously”.

Debbie Law, International Lash Trainer, said: “Whilst rubbing your eyes could seem pretty harmless, rubbing them too hard can lead to thinning of the cornea, cause blood vessels to break and result in bloodshot eyes and dark under eyes.”

Thinning of the cornea could spell trouble for your vision over time.

2. Overuse of extensions

Once you’ve had eyelash extensions, it’s difficult to turn back.

However, be wary that using them too often can lead to eye infection, allergic reactions and damage to your natural lashes.

If you simply can’t resist rushing to the salon to get your lashes done, Debbie advises washing your eyelashes everyday with an oil-free gentle eye make-up remover to remove a build-up of dead skin.

To remove bacteria, she recommends using a Lash & Lid Foaming Cleanser twice a week, carefully dabbing a towel around the eye area to dry then finally combing through with a disposable mascara wand.

3. Wearing mascara too often

Give your poor lashes a break from time to time.

For wearing mascara too much can leave them straggly or worse, falling out.

It is also a cause of damage to tear film and eye infection.

Debbie said: “Most of the damage of wearing mascara lies in the removal process, which is why using mascara every single day can cause lash breakage, as well as making the makeup removal process more difficult.

“Opt for an oil based makeup remover when removing the mascara, and don’t rub the area too aggressively.”

4. Ripping false lashes off

Debbie said: “We’ve all been there. It’s the end of the day and there’s nothing more satisfying than just ripping off your falsies.

“But this can lead to not only losing your lashes, but damaging the hair follicles so they don’t grow back.

“Generally, when used properly, using false lashes won't damage the real ones at all.

“It's only when you over-apply glue, or pull the lashes off aggressively, that the lashes break off.”

Take false lashes out as carefully as possible or, as Debbie advises, soak your eyes in water first to loosen the glue.

5. Sharing mascara

Sharing mascara, or any makeup for that matter, is just a big no-no.

“Sharing cosmetics, especially mascara, eyeshadow and eyeliner, can lead to a staph infection, pink eye, and even lash lice,” warns Debbie.
