Mystery and intrigue has always surrounded the infamous Playboy Mansion but these days many are eager to talk about what happened behind the scenes.

Before it closed its doors a few years ago, the iconic pad in Los Angeles hosted a number of celebrities and socialites.

Hugh Hefner resided in Holmby Hills for more than 40 years with a group of "girlfriends" he referred to as the "bunnies”.

It wasn't until the magazine tycoon was laid to rest in 2017 that many of his former acquaintances came forward to share what it was really like behind the wrought iron gates.

Former playmates and guests have shared tales of carpets encrusted with dog excrement, unhygienic-sounding group-pleasure sessions, and shady methods of payment.

It seems that for many, the Playboy wasn’t what it was all cracked up to be.

    Bunnies 'self-medicated to cope'

Holly Madison is one of the most famous bunnies to come out of the Playboy Mansion, which is in part thanks to the E! reality show The Girls Next Door.

She was known as Hef's main girlfriend, but that position caused her stress and despair. She turned to substances and alcohol to cope with the challenges she encountered living in the mansion.

“The depths of my own depression had led me down this very dark path, and there was no gleaming light, however distant, at the end of this tunnel,” she wrote in her book Down the Rabbit Hole: Curious Adventures and Cautionary Tales of a Former Playboy Bunny.

“Maybe it was the pot and the alcohol, but drowning myself seemed a logical way to escape the ridiculous life I was leading.”

Dog poo carpets and stained mattresses

Izabella St James is another one of Hugh’s exes and she detailed the disgusting living conditions she and other bunnies were made to live in in her book Bunny Tales: Behind Closed Doors at the Playboy Mansion.

“Hef did not care about our carpets: the one in his bedroom had not been changed for years. It was literally the colour of diarrhoea,” she wrote.

“It became significantly worse when Holly moved in with her first dog and then got another. The dogs were not housebroken and relieved themselves on the carpet. Many a late night or early morning we stepped in her dog's pee, or worse, poop.”

She added: “Although we all did our best to decorate our rooms and make them homey, the mattresses on our beds were disgusting – old, worn and stained. The sheets were past their best, too.”

    'Underage sex and inappropriate kissing'

Jennifer Saginor moved into the Playboy Mansion when she was 11 years old and said in the Channel 4 documentary Secrets of Playboy that she witnessed harrowing sights that stayed with her through to adult life.

The 51-year-old, from California in the US, revealed how seeing sex, drugs and debauchery in the mansion from a young age impacted her as a person.

Jennifer said: “It was such a weird f***ed up place … Hef would kiss with his mouth open in sort of a French kiss sort of way.

“I always thought it was strange that someone who was like my uncle would kiss like that – but my father told me that’s what people do when they love each other.”

She witnessed Playmates being ridiculed over their appearances – and soon became self-conscious about her own body.

Jennifer was also exposed to sexuality when she was still "immature emotionally" and found herself falling in love with one of Hefner's girlfriends – and slept with her while underage.

Disturbingly, Jennifer claims the "affair" was allowed to continue until she turned 17.

    Polyamorous relationships

Former Playmate Jill Ann Spaulding previously detailed what transpired during the polyamorous sessions in the Mansion.

“Each girl gets on top of [Hefner] for two minutes while the girls in the background try to keep him excited. They’ll yell things like, ‘[do] her daddy'… There’s a lot of cheerleader going on!” she wrote in a Blogspot post.

She also revealed that during these group sessions, protection was never used.

“No protection and no testing. He doesn't care … [His main girlfriend] is the first to [sleep with him] because that's the safest for her,” she wrote in her memoir.

    Strict allowances for Bunnies

In her memoir, Izabella revealed that the women living in the mansion were given an allowance of around £816 a week.

They had to go to Hugh Hefner's bedroom once per week to ask for the cash and Izabella felt like strings were attached.

She said: "Life was so unstable at the mansion that we always felt that we had to get [the allowance] right then, because we did not know if we would be there tomorrow.

“Hef used the occasion as an excuse to bring up whatever he wasn't happy with in the relationship. He put us on the spot, making us feel uncomfortable. He would tell us what needed to be changed and speak to the other girls about it.

“Although he always told us that we were his family and he gave it to us out of love, we often felt like the allowance was not given out of concern or generosity. He used it as a [tool] to make sure we would never leave.”
