Millie Bobby Brown fans have erupted into a row over whether she is ‘too young’ to get engaged – after she announced her boyfriend Jake Bongiovi had popped the question.

The Stranger Things actress, who turned 19 at the start of February, shared the news with a sweet Instagram post on Tuesday alongside her beau, 20, who is the son of legendary singer Jon Bon Jovi.

Sharing the news yesterday, she showed off her glimmering rock and beamed from ear to ear while in the arms of her new fiancé.

However despite her own excitement over the news, her followers were left divided over whether it was the right decision for the actress, who rose to fame aged 11 as Elle in Stranger Things.

Many insisted she was too young to be making such a huge life decision, with  one tweeting: ’19 is definitely too young to get engaged and/or married but to each their own.’

The actress, who recently turned 19 at the start of February,  began acting as an eight-year-old (left) before finding fame in Stranger Things (right)

Another wrote: ‘Unpopular opinion but she’s way too young to be engaged. But age 19, you don’t even know who you are yet.’

A third added: ‘Look, they seem cute, but she’s 19 right? They’re too young to be getting engaged, WTF?’

A fourth commented: ‘Milly Bobby Brown being engaged at 19 is worrying, sorry. I hope she is okay and knows what she is doing, but 19 is just way too young.’

One wrote: ‘I still think she’s too young at the age of 19 to be engaged, but if it makes them happy, who am I or us to judge?’

Another added: ‘I mean, in my opinion 19 is just too young an age to make a commitment as monumental as marriage, but she’s allowed to make her own choices.’

However others defended her decision, saying she is ‘older than her years’, having been in the acting industry since she was just eight.

One wrote: ‘I usually don’t engage in celebrity gossip, but why do people think Millie Bobby Brown can’t be engaged?

‘She’s 19. Are 18-19 year olds not able to do adult things? They’re adult too…I feel like these are the same people that think petite women are children. Oh my god.’

Another commented: ‘There’s one more thing that I think is very important. Ya’ll are saying that Millie is 19 and that’s too young to get engaged.

‘Let me remind you, Millie isn’t a normal 19 year old and she shouldn’t be compared to them.’

Millie started acting when the family moved to Florida, enrolling in a stage school where she would spend four hours every Saturday.

An agent who spotted her said she was a ‘natural’ and should move to LA to launch her career.

However despite her own excitement over the news, her followers were left divided over whether it was the right decision for the actress

What is the legal age of marriage?

At 19 and 20, Millie and her partner Jake are both over the legal age of marriage in the UK – which is where Millie is originally from.

In the UK, the legal age for marriage was earlier this year changed from 16 to 18.

Under legislation passed last year but which came into force in February, 16 and 17-year-olds can no longer wed or enter a civil partnership in England or Wales.

Until now they were able to do this as long as there was parental consent.

The change, under the Marriage and Civil Partnership (Minimum Age) Act, is to better protect children from forced marriage.

It means it is now a crime to exploit vulnerable children by arranging for them to marry under any circumstances, whether or not force was used.

The couple could also legally marry in the US, where Millie and Jake currently live.

There are a number of different laws about what age people can get married.

As recently as 2017, marriage for under 18s was legal in all 50 states.

Currently, only seven states ban all marriages for those aged under 18, and seven states still have no minimum age limit for tying the knot.

Convinced of her talent, the Browns sold up, even though their finances became so rocky that Millie’s manager Melanie Greene had to lend them cash.

Millie said: ‘There were times we didn’t know if we could afford food or pay the rent. It was very hard. There were lots of tears.’

While Millie won small roles on TV shows including Grey’s Anatomy, Paige returned to the UK.

By the summer of 2015, the entire family had accepted defeat and moved back to the UK, penniless.

A few weeks later, they learned Millie had won the role of Eleven in Stranger Things, a girl with telekinetic and psychic powers.

Despite some saying they were concerned about the news, others said it was ‘amazing news’ because she ‘isn’t a normal 19-year-old’

Today, Millie is said to be worth millions and often spotted in couture clothes by Gucci, Kenzo and Burberry, she has an A-list stylist and has become a style icon.

Vogue has even credited her with reinventing red carpet dressing after she wore a Louis Vuitton stretch minidress and trainers to a recent press call.

She has been the face of Calvin Klein, and she’s signed a megabucks deal to promote Converse sneakers.

Millie’s rise to Hollywood fame has drawn comparisons with many stars — perhaps most hauntingly Judy Garland, who was signed to MGM under contract aged 13 and was 16 when she made The Wizard Of Oz.

Like Garland, Millie experienced instant global celebrity at a tender age. Add in A-list agents, A-list friends, huge followings on Twitter and Instagram and some jaw-dropping demands for money and it’s clear her skyward trajectory is being carefully managed.

Forever: Jake also shared an announcement post to his own page, simply writing ‘forever’ alongside two snaps of the couple

Smitten: The duo are thought to have gone official with their romance in 2021 (pictured in October)

Announcing the news she was engaged yesterday, Millie penned in the caption: ‘I’ve loved you three summers now, honey, I want ’em all’.

While Jake also shared an announcement post to his own page, simply writing ‘forever’ alongside two snaps of the couple.

Celebrating the joyous news, the smitten couple took part in a beachy photoshoot – with Millie dressed in a crochet dress while Jake donned a cream polo shirt.

Their famous friends rushed to the comments to congratulate the happy couple on the news.

Pixie Lott wrote: ‘Omg!!!! Congratulations you two so happpy for you eeeee’.

While her Stranger Things co-stars Amybeth McNulty and Jamie Campbell Bower also commented, with Amybeth writing: ‘YESSSS!!!!!!!’ and Jamie posting a slew of heart emojis.

Tilly Ramsay commented: ‘Congratulations!! Xx’

While Jess Wright said: ‘Ommmmggggg congratulations!!!!!!!!! @milliebobbybrown this is amazing. So so happy for you darling’.

The announcement confirms some speculation that has been circulating on social media over recent weeks, after she flashed a glimpse at the ring in a recent post.

Posing behind the wheel of a convertible car in a picture last month, Millie looked away from the camera and lifted her hand in the air, showing the prominent diamond ring on her finger.
