Viewers of Jamie Oliver’s budget TV show One Pound Wonders were left baffled on Monday night as he demonstrated a ‘fridge cake’ that people thought looked suspiciously like rocky road.

As the third episode of the celebrity chef’s cost-saving show aired on Channel 4 at 8pm last night, he gave viewers a new batch of recipes to feed families for less than £1 per portion, and included a dessert at the end.

As he mixed together chocolate, biscuits and other sweet treats to create his tasty-looking ‘fridge cake’, which doesn’t require baking and saves on energy, viewers took to Twitter to proclaim what he had actually made was a rocky road and was not an original recipe.

However, the ‘store cupboard fridge cake’ came in at just 47p per portion and didn’t require any cooking at all, meaning it was an enticing recipe for some viewers.

During the episode, Jamie demonstrated recipes including a chicken pie with shortcrust pastry, mackerel spaghetti and a mushroom risotto before finishing off with the fridge cake.

Overall, viewers were torn on the episode, with some claiming they planned to make all of the recipes Jamie had demonstrated. However others were less impressed and suggested the celebrity chef, who is thought to be worth around £240 million, was not the right person to be sharing budget recipes with people.

As he came to the final recipe of the program, the fridge cake, people were confused as to why he had not called it a rocky road, as it seemed strikingly similar to the well-known treat which is a well established recipe.

Introducing the recipe, he described it as ‘deliciously decadent’ and costing approximately 47p per portion. He added it was a good way to use up dried fruit and nuts.

The recipe included dark chocolate, butter, golden syrup, ginger nut biscuits, marshmallows, dried fruit and nuts, all mixed together, put into a loaf tin and left to set in the fridge.

While Jamie joked at the end of the episode that he didn’t know what to call the recipe, viewers took to Twitter to argue they knew exactly what it was: a rocky road

At the end of the episode, as he sliced through the fridge cake, he joked: ‘I don’t know what to call it’ – but viewers on Twitter had some ideas.

One person wrote: ‘Surely that’s rocky road?’

Another said: ‘That’s just rocky road mate. It’s a well established thing, you can’t just claim it’s something else.’

One viewer, who was impressed by the recipe, also referred to it as a ‘rocky road’ as she promised to make it soon.

While the series so far has been popular with viewers, it has left them divided over the cost of some of the ingredients, with people questioning on Twitter how much it would cost to put the recipes together.

They have also raised concerns about the cost of cooking some of the recipes, as energy prices are not factored into Jamie’s calculations.

However, while demonstrating his recipes, the chef does make note of ways in which you can save on energy while cooking. For example, he has claimed that putting the lid on the pan while cooking rice and beans is more energy efficient as it steams the ingredients and does not let as much heat go to waste.

Additionally in the case of his fridge cake, the only cooking he uses is boiling some water over which to melt the chocolate and butter, showing he is taking into account soaring energy bills.

According to the show, the cost of each ingredient and recipe per portion is calculated by finding the average cost of the items in several major supermarkets.

Although he has faced some criticism from viewers for the cost of the recipes, he has left many people inspired, with viewers on Twitter promising to test out many of his recipes.

One viewer last night replied to the Jamie Oliver Twitter account, saying they would be making the recipes and blogging about them soon – and added: ‘OMG, the rocky road!’
