Jay Blades has jokingly described the King’s Coronation as a ‘Disney horror movie’ saying the day was ‘beautiful’ but ‘quite eerie’.

Repair Shop handyman, 53, who was a guest at Westminster Abbey to watch King Charles acceded to the throne on May 6, opened up about the event on ITV today.

Speaking to the host Lorraine, he said: ‘This might sound weird but if Disney done a horror movie…it was beautiful but at the same time quite eerie.

‘Westminster, I have been around it loads of times before and I have never seen it as empty as that, it was just unbelievable like there was nobody there because everyone was in the church.

‘The choir when they were singing, it’s one of the most eeriest things I have ever seen.’

He added: ‘Family asked did you take any pictures, but we weren’t allowed to take any pictures but I have the memories and that’s enough.’

Asked if it was true that he took a packed lunch into The Coronation he revealed he did.

The TV star said: ‘We had to be at Westminster Abbey for 7:30 am and the hotel I was staying in didn’t start breakfast until 8 am so they made me a little goodie bag’

‘It was quite nice, and then someone I met when I was doing an interview they had some gummy bears in their bag, because you need a pudding after breakfast don’t you.’

The handyman, who is based in Ironbridge, Shropshire, initially met Charles when the royal appeared on his BBC programme Repair Shop, which Jay presents.

Jay was among the hundreds of guests who had to be seated inside Westminster Abbey by 9am.

Elsewhere the star spoke about his wedding to wife to Lisa Zbozen in Barbados in November 2022.

He said: ‘It was hot but it was really special. It was beautiful but I hope she doesn’t mind me saying this but we got married in our villa and we went to a restaurant after, we took the whole family there, but she had to sit in the boot.

‘Because we didn’t have many cars, it was a little bit crazy, in her dress.’

Asked if the boot was open he replied: ‘No it wasn’t, it was closed, she was sitting down but she was in the boot.’

Elsewhere the star revealed he is set to appear in a special factual series on Channel 5 that explores the East End of London.

The series is titled Jay Blades: History Of The East End and is a Hungry Jay Media production and is set to air tomorrow at 9pm.

Made up of three one-hour episodes, Jay delves into the unique past of his neighbourhood in London’s East End.

Asked if it was true that he took a packed lunch into The Coronation he revealed it was true

He said: ‘It is an unbelievable place, like i have liked there and I never knew the amount of history that was there.

‘Once you start digging it’s unbelievable the stories, the people, the characters, it’s like wow.

‘I was so surprised, I didn’t know the french came over and what they did in terms of the silk industry, or the weaving industry I should say.’

Jay went onto say there will be a Repair Shop special coming to the BBC soon to celebrate 75 years since Windrush generation.

Not giving much away he said: ‘The only thing I can say is someone came in with a grip, now a grip is what they used to call a suitcase, I am not going to let out too much but there is a grip.’

In The Repair Shop: A Royal Visit, Charles needed help with an 18th-century bracket clock and a piece made for Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee by British ceramics maker Wemyss Ware.

He said the damaged 19th century ceramic piece fell over when someone was opening a window – ‘they didn’t own up’, he joked.

People at the time took to social media to speak about how much they loved their bromance.

Jay revealed on Loose Women the king had even invited him round for a sleepover.

Speaking on the ITV show, Jay explained: ‘I had no opinion on him, but went to meet him and we just hit it off and spoke about craft.

‘The funny thing is I was supposed to go up there because I’m an ambassador for his charity and he had invited me three times to go up there, have a look around, spend the night and have a sleepover at the then Prince’s house.

‘I went there on the fourth attempt after turning him down three times and I said to the Mrs I said I best go, or I’ll get kicked out of the country.’
