The Prince and Princess of Wales visited the BBC studios in London yesterday, October 10, to record and film a special episode of Newsbeat for World Mental Health Day. The couple spoke eloquently with others who had either experienced ill mental health or were promoting awareness of it, or both. What was Kate and William’s body language like?

Body language expert Judi James analysed Kate and William during their stint on Radio One, and what she noticed about the couple was “different” to usual.

She said: “We normally see William and Kate using very mirrored body language when they are on visits together, which highlights their like-minded thinking and the similarities in their personalities, but here we are seeing something different.

“Talking about mental health, William and Kate move into different but complimentary body language states.

“William is more active and, for him, the advice and the points look and sound personal, to suggest they are things that help him that he is just passing on.

“He mimes his invisible toolkit and he places a hand on his chest to register the way the concept is one that he uses and visualises.”

The toolkit William referred to is what, he said, helps him when his mental health isn’t as good as he wants it to be – when he is feeling a little low or anxious.

Judi continued: “He smiles but it is a modest smile with a lot of puckering of the muscles of the lips and he sits forward and almost hunched in his seat to suggest his personal bond with the subject matter.

“The modesty in his signals shows that he is not speaking as a guru but as someone offering to share tips or techniques.”

As for the Princess of Wales, Judi claimed: “Kate uses intense listening signals as William talks, just as they both do when the others in the studio are speaking.

“William frowns in concentration while Kate nods with a serious facial expression.

“Their focus seems to be as much on listening as talking here, which shows a real awareness of their subject-matter.

“When Kate speaks she uses torso movement to engage and inspire as she throws a question out at the interviewers, almost like a professional interviewer herself.

“She looks confident in this scenario and that projection of confidence and strength reflects in the way that, when she and William both speak at once, he is the one who very naturally backs down.”

For her filmed appearance at Radio One, Kate opted for her Inverted Lapel Long Blazer from Zara, which costs $69.90, or roughly £63.37.

According to Zara’s website, the item is a “fitted blazer with inverted lapels and long sleeves with shoulder pads” and also has “front welt pockets”.

The Princess previously wore this blazer on June 8, 2022, when she visited Little Village Brent.

Kate combined this blazer with a plain white top and a pair of black trousers.

But what stood out the most was her necklace: it was the Luisa gold chain necklace by deisgner Laura Lombardi.

The piece divided fans as they expressed their opinions on social media. Twitter user @Emma4AboutRoyal wrote: “It is something that is very unlike anything we’ve seen so far on Kate.

“Very heavy. Absolutely big dislike. Way too much.”

Royal fan @KateMiddStyle tweeted: “Definitely unlike anything we’ve seen her wear before.

“I had the same reaction when I first saw it. It’s growing on me now though.”

Royal watcher @HelenPe96368576 added: “Beautiful outfit.”
