Living apart from fella is the secret to our happy marriage – pals are jealous

A woman believes she’s found the “secret” to a happy marriage – and it’s a tad unconventional.

Bianca Turetsky, 43, a bestselling author from Brooklyn, New York City and her husband Dr Peter Bach, 58, got hitched in September, 2021.

But to both their friends' and families' surprise, the pair decided to continue living in separate homes.

Despite people telling them their situation is “unusual”, the couple don’t care and even sense underlying “envy” from critics.

Bianca was happy living solo in an apartment with her rescue cat, Cleo, while Peter was equally content living with his teenage son.

The author said “I do” for the first time aged 42 and had already built up her own life, so decided to tear up the marriage rulebook.

“Following the traditional playbook wasn’t going to make anyone happy. Why did we have to live by old conventions?” she explained in an article for Today.

“Why couldn’t we make it up as we went along? Who says what a good marriage should look like?”

Peter’s son is allergic to cats, and Bianca knew that getting rid of Cleo wasn’t an option.

And of course, her husband couldn’t kick out his child for the sake of a fluffy feline.

But despite the teen moving away for college, the pair have continued to live alone – and it’s been the perfect situation for them.

Now, the couple spend several nights a week at one another’s places before returning to the solitude of their own homes.

“Most people we tell about our unusual living situation move pretty quickly from surprise to curiosity to, in some cases, a little envy,” Bianca wrote.

Thanks to distance making the heart grow fonder – a 38 minute commute to be exact – the couple say that every day feels like date night.

Bianca added: “We’ve been together for almost six years now and yet a mundane weekday evening still feels like a date.”

While some think that separate bathrooms may be too far, the author concluded that “this living arrangement is the secret to our happiness”.
