Martin Lewis' MoneySavingExpert reveals the best time to grab yellow sticker bargains from supermarket | The Sun

MARTIN Lewis has revealed the best time to visit the supermarket and bag yellow sticker bargains.

The team at MoneySavingExpert (MSE) have explained how visiting the shops at a certain time could mean you're more likely to find discounted items.

The supermarket tips were included in the MoneySavingExpert newsletter, which offers advice to households who are being hit by soaring bills from energy to food to fuel.

It will come in handy as shoppers have seen food bills rise by 11.6% -which works out at an annual increase of £533 for the average household.

What is a yellow-sticker deal?

Yellow-sticker bargains, tend to crop up when supermarkets shift food that's approaching its use-by date.

The way shoppers know these items are discounted is because supermarkets put a yellow sticker on packets indicating the revised price.

They can also be used to offer discounts on food in damaged packaging or on lines that are being discontinued, such as Christmas chocolates once the festive season is over.

Often there will be an entire shelf or section of the supermarket dedicated to these clearance bargains but sometimes you can find them tucked away with full-priced items.

These goods often have up to 75% off the retail price, so if you have a big freezer, it's the perfect way to stock up on the best brands for less.

Here's how you could bag yellow sticker bargains at Asda, Co-op, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Tesco, Lidl and Aldi according to MoneySavingExpert.

Asda

Yellow sticker bargains are very popular, meaning they are often snapped up very quickly.

If you're an Asda shopper, MoneySavingExpert say final reductions often start at around 7pm.

But you'll have to be quick, as most bargains are snapped up by 9pm.

You can also save money at Asda by checking out their new Just Essentials range.

The range is now being stocked in all 581 supermarkets and they are often a lot cheaper than bigger brand names you might find on the shelf.

Another easy way to spot a bargain at Asda is to look for the Rollback prices.

The store claims to reduce the price of thousands of its products with the pricing scheme.

You can get things from food to laundry and household products, plus pet stuff and kids items too, all slashed down in price.

You can check out more tips for saving money at Asda by looking at The Sun's guide to saving money at its stores.

Co-op

Readers told the MSE team that the timing of discounts at Co-op varies by store.

One former staff member told the team that items that expire that day can be reduced by up to 50%.

Another said that if you wait until 8pm, you might be able to get a 75% discount.

Co-op shoppers van get rewards and personalised offers through the retailer's app.

The app is free to download on android and Apple devices and lets members of the loyalty scheme monitor how many rewards they've earned.

Members can choose two offers every week that can be used on top of any in-store promotions, saving you even more cash.

Morrisons

Reductions tend to start late morning or lunchtime at Morrisons – but it does vary depending on the store, shoppers told MSE.

And it seems more and more people are getting hooked on the yellow sticker bargains, as one woman who never used to buy the expiry foods became obsessed after nabbing a chicken at Morrisons for just 43p.

If you regularly shop at Morrisons, it could be worth joining Morrisons loyalty scheme My Morrisons.

Unlike other supermarket schemes, shoppers don't collect points and instead are given digital coupons that can be used for instant savings in store.

So you won't be able to earn anything on your shopping, but you'll get "personalised offers" and coupons to get money off your groceries.

Sainsbury's

Sainsbury's told MSE that its yellow stick discounts are "completely store dependent".

But some moneysavers said it is worth looking around lunchtime, while others said later in the evening is best.

If miss out on the supermarket's yellow sticker discounts, you can try keeping an eye out for its regular deals.

Promotions tend to start on a Wednesday, the supermarket previously confirmed to The Sun.

Sainsbury's regularly slashes the price on more than 1,000 of its items.

This is known as the price lock and it takes place online, and in store, every eight weeks.

The supermarket locks its prices on a range of products including food, household, drinks and toiletries.

Its part of the supermarket's pledge to price match Aldi.

Tesco

Tesco has no "hard and fast rule" on yellow sticker discounts, MSE said.

A supermarket insider previously told The Sun shoppers often wait around for the discounts and gather around staff as they're putting sticker on.

But yellow sticker discounts aren't the only way you can save money at Tesco.

If you have a Clubcard, you will be able to make the most of discounted, member-only prices.

To find the best discounts, all products included in Clubcard Prices in store will be marked with a promotion label.

Offers will also be highlighted for shoppers buying online.

Then all you need to do is present your Clubcard at the till or enter your member number before paying online.

It doesn't matter when you signed up, so customers can still become a member now to access the deals.

Signing up is free and you can become a member online on the Tesco website.

Lidl

One money saver told MSE that they go to Lidl as soon as it opens to pick up ready meals for just 20p.

Supermarket experts have previously told The Sun it discounts its items at the start of the day, unlike other grocers.

Lidl usually reduces products in its 800 UK stores near the use-by date to about 30% of the original price, bloggers from Student Hacks have previously revealed.

Shoppers can also bag a bargain by downloading Lidl's loyalty app.

You have to scan your card as you shop in store (Lidl currently doesn’t offer an online shopping service), which sees you earn points.

Once you’ve earned a certain amount of points, Lidl will give you money off your shopping.

Aldi

Aldi's yellow sticker discounts start appearing from 8pm, one reader told MSE.

But if you're unable to get to the supermarket late in the evening, then don't worry.

Every two weeks Aldi carefully selects six products to feature in its Super Six offer.

Currently, you can buy an assortment of fruit and veg from just 59p in the deal.

As the deal is refreshed every two weeks, shoppers only have a short window to make the most of the offers until they are changed.

This one you can claim in-store though, or via click and collect with an additional charge of £4.99, but you can't have the discounted products delivered to your door as Aldi doesn't offer the service.

How to save on your supermarket shop

Grocery prices are soaring and many shoppers are trying to cut their spending as the cost of living crisis rumbles on.

From moving to a cheaper supermarket, looking out for yellow-sticker discounts, and downshifting to own-brand products, there are ways to cut your costs.

You can also change the way you trawl the aisles to find savings. Head to the world foods aisle for store cupboard staples, says consumer expert Vix Leyton.

"This aisle typically has great value options on herbs and spices. It's also good for essentials like tinned tomatoes and chickpeas," she said.

Many items can be picked up for less in the frozen aisle – particularly fruit and veg.

Cheaper priced items are often placed on the bottom shelf at supermarkets – so be sure to look beyond the eye-level shelves when ticking things off your shopping list.
