Melanie Brown, 48, rose to fame in the 1990s in the band the Spice Girls. She moved on to a solo career, and as a talent show judge on The X Factor.

The mother of three daughters is divorced and lives in Leeds.

LEARN TO EMBRACE THE UNEXPECTED

Even as a kid, things did not turn out the way they were supposed to. My mum thought I was a really active child, but it wasn’t until my much calmer sister came along five years later that she realised I was a bit more than that.

I was a real handful. So around the age of six or seven, I was put in local dance classes to use up my energy, which turned into me loving the entertainment world and wanting to dance and sing.

She was awarded an MBE for services to charitable causes and vulnerable women in 2022

If it wasn’t for that, maybe I wouldn’t have been a Spice Girl.

In my early 40s, I got diagnosed with ADHD, ADD, dyspraxia and dyslexia and a lot of my behaviour as a little girl suddenly made sense. It would have been way easier for Mum and for me if we’d known that back then.

As the Spice Girls, we knew we had something special. We experienced a lot of rejection at first, but it spurred us on to work harder.

We became so successful that, again, very unexpected things happened to us. I had so many firsts with the group — writing our own songs, taking a plane to America, performing in a stadium, doing a movie, touring the world!

What I didn’t expect was for it to be over so quickly. We were all so dedicated and on such a mission.

Of course, it didn’t end for good. In 2000, we went off in other directions but in 2019 got back together to perform and tour. I didn’t see that coming, either.

I lived in LA for 25 years, and two of my three daughters were born there. When we came over in 2019 for the Spice Girls tour, my kids asked: ‘Why are we living in LA? All your family live in Leeds.’ That was something I didn’t expect.

So in 2019 I moved back to Leeds with my daughters Phoenix and Angel, and my other daughter, Madison, spends her school holidays with us. Now I live minutes from my mum, my sister and my aunties and uncles.

It’s a great thing, except on Saturday mornings when three of your aunties want to pop by and just use your pool willy-nilly, without even asking!
