Carlos has been posting his tongue-in-cheek hacks on his TikTok account @carlosmanwelly for his 51,000 followers. He turned his humour to the energy crisis for a recent skit.

Demonstrating his money saving “hack” he said: “To save money, instead of boiling the kettle to make a cup of tea, after I do the ironing I like to use the water from the iron to fill the cup.

“And then I put it in the microwave for 15 seconds. It’s also a great way to recycle the water from the iron.”

Of course, drinking water from the iron is not advised but his followers enjoyed his satirical take on the cost of living crisis and rising energy bills.

“Ahhh an iron brew,” one of his fans joked, a play on the famous orange Scottish soft drink.

“This is great I’m low on iron anyway,” another playfully remarked.

One said, “that’s very extreme,” while another said, “I know things are bad but they’re not that bad mate.”

Others playfully suggested their own silly ways to battle rising energy costs.

“I just wait outside for 10 mins in the rain to let the cup fill up then pop it in the oven on max for five minutes,” one said.

“We can also use water from the toilet after we flush,” another wrote. One suggested: “To save money use the hot kettle to iron your clothes.”

While the above suggestions are all jokes, there are ways to really make a difference to your energy bills by changing your kitchen habits.

How to keep your kettle energy efficient to save money

Keep it clean

Descale your kettle often, as the build up of limescale means your kettle has to work much hard to boil your water.

Only boil the water you need

Overfilling your kettle when you are boiling it will use more energy than you need, as you are boiling too much water over and over again.

Use the hop

It is actually slightly cheaper to boil water on a gas hob than in the kettle, provided you are only building what you need.

Making your kitchen more efficient

Other areas of the kitchen can be made more efficient to save you money, too. This is especially true of the fridge and freezer.

To keep your fridge and freezer more efficient, don’t keep the door open for too long.

Keep the fridge between 0 and 5°C, which is cool enough to keep food safe but not so cool as to use excess energy unnecessarily.

Try to keep your fridge and freezer about three-quarters full for maximum efficiency.
