As the temperature continues to drop through the last month of the year, a mum has found an ingenious trick to keep safe while walking on icy pavements.

Mum-of-two Mel called it an "absolute game changer" after testing it out on a slippery road.

And the best part of it – all you need is a pair of old socks.

In the video, Mel showed her shoes with a pair of socks worn over the top.

"So it's happening right now, it's an absolute game changer," she said.

"When it's icy, socks and shoes, thanks mum.

    "Don't mind the faded socks."

She called it the best and most needed hack at the moment as she explained in five words – "socks worn over your shoes".

Although some might argue that it looks silly, Mel said: "Who cares what we look like! I'd rather be safe so definitely give it a go, it's amazing!"

For the past two days, the country has been hit with heavy snow and freezing temperatures.

The Met Office warned the cold is set to remain by the end of this week as meteorologist Matthew Lehnert said many places will struggle to get above freezing temperatures during the day.

He also said overnight temperatures have the potential to drop below -10C in rural parts of Scotland.

Viewers were happy to try Mel's suggestion, with one saying: "I'd rather look silly with socks over shoes than struggling around on crutches after snapping a leg slipping on ice."

"I'm going to do this!" another agreed. "I recently slipped and broke my elbow so I have the absolute fear of falling again. This will help so much."

Mel said you can either wear the socks halfway over the shoes, or wear it whole.
